2010 Midlands Championships - Session Two Complete Results
EVANSTON, Ill. - The Michigan State wrestling team finished session two of the 48th annual Midlands Championships, hosted by Northwestern University, Wednesday night at Welsh-Ryan Arena.
Four Spartans still remain in contention to place after two sessions of wrestling on Wednesday. In the team standings, the Spartans are in 19th place with 18.5 points.
At 174 pounds, Curran Jacobs won four straight in the consolation bracket after falling in his first match of the day. Jacobs finished session two with a 6-4 decision over eighth-seeded Ben Friedl of Northern Illinois and will face second-seeded Nick Amuchastegui of Stanford tomorrow in session three.
Tyler Dickenson also lost in his first match of the day, but bounced back to defeat Clarion's Clint Podish, 7-5, and seventh-seeded John Schoen of Northwestern, 5-2, in the consolation bracket. Dickenson opens up on Thursday against fifth-seeded Riley Orozco of Cal State Bakersfield.
Two Spartans are still wrestling in the heavyweight division.
Mike McClure, who is seeded seventh, won his final four matches of the day in the consolation bracket, including a fall against 12th-seeded Kyle Simonson of Iowa State in 6:21 to wrap up session two.
Joe Rizqallah also won his last four matches, featuring victories over teammate Steve Andrus and Spencer Myers of Maryland. McClure will wrestle third-seeded DJ Russo of Rutgers to start session three, while Rizqallah will go against 10th-seeded Michael McMullan of Northwestern.
Dan Osterman, seeded 11th at 149 pounds, lost his first match, but won his next two in the consolation bracket before falling to fourth-seeded Eric Terrazas of Illinois, 6-4.
Thursday's session three will run from 1-4:30 p.m. ET, and the final session (championship, third-, fifth-place matches) will go from 8:15-10:30 p.m. ET. A television broadcast of the championship matches will air on tape delay on the Big Ten Network, with the debut coming at 4 p.m. ET on Saturday, Jan. 8 and a re-air scheduled for 7 p.m. ET on Friday, Jan. 14. The Big Ten Network's Tim Johnson will handle the play-by-play duties for the broadcast with Northwestern volunteer assistant coach and current World Team member Jake Herbert providing color analysis.
