
Wrestling Falls at No. 6 Iowa, 29-10

IOWA CITY, Iowa - The Michigan State wrestling team suffered its first loss of the season Saturday night, falling at sixth-ranked Iowa, 29-10, before a crowd of 6,031 at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
The Spartans (4-1, 0-1 Big Ten) won three matches in the dual, including Dan Osterman's 12-2 major decision at 149 pounds over Jeret Chiri. At 174, Curran Jacobs upset No. 20 Ethen Lofthouse, 6-5, while at heavyweight, Mike McClure also recorded a victory over a ranked opponent, defeating No. 15 Blake Rasing, 4-2.
The Hawkeyes (6-0) began the dual winning the first three matches, jumping out to a quick 17-0 lead. Top-ranked Matt McDonough pinned Eric Olanowski in 3:48 at 125 pounds, then Tony Ramos registered a 16-1 technical fall against Josh Harper at 133. Mark Ballweg recorded the second fall of the night, pinning Joel Trombly in the first period in the 141 bout.
Osterman got MSU on the board with his 12-2 major decision. The sophomore recorded a takedown 31 seconds into the first period, then notched near fall points to go up, 5-0. He delivered another takedown and near fall points in the second to take a 9-2 lead into the last period. In the third, he got his third takedown of the bout, and added a riding time point with his 3:16 advantage.
Iowa took a 20-4 lead into intermission as No. 9 Derek St. John topped No. 13 David Cheza at 157 pounds, 9-7. St. John had the first takedown, but Cheza responded with a reversal and near fall points to close out the first period. Cheza escaped to begin the second to go up 6-2, but St. John trimmed the lead to 7-6 after getting two takedowns later in the period. St. John took the lead for good with a takedown at the 1:15 mark in the third, and closed with a riding time advantage of 2:50 to win 9-7.
In the first match after the break, No. 15 Jake Kerr defeated Ben Boudro at 165 pounds, 4-2.
Jacobs notched MSU's second win of the night with his 6-5 win over Lofthouse at 174 pounds. Jacobs took an early 2-0 with a takedown in the first, but then fell behind 4-2 after two escapes and a takedown by Lofthouse. Jacobs recorded an escape with 1:07 remaining in the second, then got a takedown to regain the lead at 5-4. A Lofthouse escape made it 5-5 going into the third. Jacobs started the third period down, escaped 13 seconds later to regain the lead, and held on the rest of the period for the win.
At 184, Ian Hinton suffered his first dual loss, dropping a 3-1 decision to No. 7 Grant Gambrall, 3-1. That match was followed by No. 13 Luke Lofthouse's 12-5 win at 197 pounds over Tyler Dickenson.
Mike McClure closed the dual with a 4-2 decision over 15th-ranked Blake Rasing in the heavyweight bout. McClure is now 5-0 in dual matches this season. There was no scoring in the first period, but in the second, McClure had an escape and a takedown to take a 3-1 lead. Although Rasing escaped midway through the third, McClure compiled a 1:13 riding time advantage to win the match, 4-2.
Michigan State returns to action for the Midlands Championships Dec. 29-30 in Evanston, Ill.
