
Softball Swept by Cal State Northridge in Sunday Tripleheader

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - After resuming a game that was postponed due to rain, the Michigan State softball team (3-9) played a tripleheader against Cal State Northridge on Sunday, Feb. 28, at Matador Diamond. The Spartans battled strong in all three games, but ultimately fell victim to the Matadors in each game. Freshman Kylene Hopkins led the Spartans offensively on the day by going 4-for-7 at the plate.
Game One
Finding themselves down 5-4 in the bottom of the seventh inning of game one, the Matadors scored two runs in the seventh to win, 6-5.
With senior Kelly Confer on the mound, Karla Chaparro scored from third off a wild pitch to tie the game at 5. Sophomore Rebecca Rogers proceeded to the rubber after Confer walked the bases loaded. Rogers forced Alvarado into a fielder's choice before walking Jaci Carlsen, to score Lauren Olivas from third.
The first game was resumed after it was delayed the previous day (Feb. 27) due to rain. When Sunday (Feb. 28) began, the Spartans found themselves leading 2-0 heading into the bottom of the third inning. After holding the Matadors scoreless in the third, MSU got on the board in the fourth when freshman Jayme O'Bryant knocked in sophomore Kalie Lamb, who was pinch running for sophomore Lauren Kramer.
The Spartans scored their fifth run in the top of the fifth when sophomore Heidi Purtzer scored from on a passed ball. Freshman Jenny Ramsaier scored the final MSU run from third off a wild pitch from Mia Pogano.
The sixth inning saw Cal State Northridge score three runs, changing the momentum of the game. The first Matador run was scored when Tracy Allen singled up the middle, scoring Jaclyn Rymer. With Allen stealing second, Alexandria Alvarado stole home to score the second run of the inning. The final run was scored when Carlson hit a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Allen from third. Northridge ended the inning trailing by one, 5-4.
Earning the loss for MSU in game one was freshman Shelby Wise. Wise fell to 1-1 on the season. Amanda Pitzenberger earned the win on the rubber for Northridge.
Game Two
Michigan State lost the second game of the doubleheader, 6-1.
The Spartans fell behind early in the second game, giving up two runs in the first inning. The Matadors saw Olivas score off a Spartan error. The second run was recorded when Carlsen's hit resulted in a fielding error, scoring Alvarado.
The lone Green and White run resulted when junior Lindsey Hansen doubled to right to score Ramsaier from third.
Northridge would go on to score four more runs in the second inning to score the win for Hannah Fraijo on the rubber. Wise once again earned the loss for MSU, bringing her record to 1-2.
Game Three
Michigan State fell 4-3 in six innings in the finale of the tripleheader.
Tied at three in the bottom of the fifth, the Matadors knocked in the final run of the game when Alvarado scored on an illegal pitch by Confer.
The Spartans pounced early in the third game as they led 2-0 at the end of the first inning. The first MSU run was scored when Hansen tripled to center, scoring Hopkins. Hansen then crossed the plate when sophomore Brett Williams singled down the right field line.
However, the 2-0 lead was not enough as Northridge responded in the second inning with a three-run inning itself to lead 3-2.
MSU tied the game at three in the top of the third when Hansen knocked in her team-leading fifth home run of the season. The Green and White was held scoreless the final three innings as it fell 4-3 in six innings.
Taking the loss for the Spartans in game three was Confer (0-3), while Fraijo earned the win for the Matadors
MSU is back in action Friday (March 6) when it travels to Boca Raton, Fla., for a doubleheader against Florida State and Eastern Michigan. Game one against the Seminoles is slated to begin at 11 a.m., while game two against the Eagles will follow at 1 p.m.
