
Softball Splits Opening Games of FIU Panther Invitational

MIAMI, Fla. - Battling inclement weather throughout the day, the Michigan State softball team (8-13) opened action at the FIU Panther Invitational on Friday, March 12, against host FIU. After falling 7-2 in the first game, the Spartans rallied back to split the doubleheader with a 4-1 win in the second. Going 3-for-6 on the day at the plate was junior Jessica Bracamonte.
After the Spartans began the game with a two-run first inning, the Panthers responded in the bottom half of the innings with six runs themselves. FIU got started early in its inning when Ashley McClain singled up the middle to bring in Kayla Burri. Jackie Tetlow got on base off an error by second, scoring two and giving the Panthers the winning run. After a total of six FIU hits, the Panthers ended the inning leading 6-2.
MSU struck first in the opening frame when freshman Jayme O'Bryant hit an RBI double to score Bracamonte from third. Freshman Kylene Hopkins was the next to score for the Spartans when sophomore Ali Grant hit a grounder to third.
FIU scored its seventh and final run in the bottom of the fourth inning when Tetlow hit a sacrifice fly to center, bringing in Jenny Welch from third. At the end of the inning, the Panthers led the Spartans 7-2.
The Green and White was able to shake its earlier defeat as it headed into the second game of the day. After Burri scored the only FIU run in the first inning, the Spartans responded in the third with a two run inning. With the score 1-1 in the third, Grant knocked in two runs with a single to bring the score to 3-1, when freshman Jenny Ramsaier and O'Bryant crossed home from second and third, respectively.
MSU scored its final run of the game to bring the final score to 4-1 in the top of the sixth inning when sophomore Lori Padilla scored from third off a passed ball by the catcher.
The Spartans are back in action when they close out their spring break trip with a doubleheader against George Washington tomorrow (March 13) with the first game slated to begin at 12 p.m. MSU's two games against the Colonials will close out action at the FIU Panther Invitational.
