OXFORD, Ohio - The Michigan State softball team (10-15) dropped its opening games of action at the Miami Invitational today (March 20). The Spartans opened the day against host Miami with a 3-1 loss, and followed with a 5-1 loss against Robert Morris in the second game.
MSU was unable to maintain its lead 1-0 after holding the RedHawks scoreless for five innings. Miami score a pair of runs in the sixth and another in the seventh to top the Spartans 3-1.
The RedHawks got on the board in the sixth inning when Sarah Billstrom hit a two-run home run to left center. The final Miami run was scored in the seventh when Daniela Torres hit a solo homer to left.
The Spartans' lone run was scored in the first when junior Lindsey Hansen hit a home run to left.
Sophomore Lauren Kramer (6-6) was the pitcher of record for the Spartans, while Meredith Lynch (3-5) earned the win for Miami.
Michigan State was unable to shake off the first game as it gave up a run in the first, third and fourth innings to Robert Morris. The Colonials took a 3-0 lead into the bottom of the fourth, when MSU got on the board for the first time when junior Jessica Bracamonte singled to score Hansen.
The first Robert Morris run was recorded off a double steal by Annie Dubovec at first and Jaci Timko at third, scoring Timko. The second run was scored in the third when Sarah Capp doubled to left, bringing in Jessica Calderone. The Colonials scored an insurance run in the fourth Katrina Gallagher single to score Allie Patton.
Senior Kelly Confer (3-7) took the loss for MSU. Alexa Bryson (4-3) was the winning pitcher for Robert Morris.
The Spartans will conclude action at the Miami Invitational Sunday (March 21) when it plays Canisius and Toledo. MSU will open the day at 12 p.m. against Canisius and conclude the afternoon with a 2 p.m. game against Toledo.
