
Softball Falls in Big Ten Opener Against Iowa

EAST LANSING, Mich. - In its Big Ten opener, the Michigan State softball team (13-16, 0-1 Big Ten) fell 3-1 to Iowa (15-12-1, 1-0 Big Ten) at Old College Field on Saturday afternoon. Junior Lindsey Hansen extended her Big Ten conference lead to 68 total bases with a single on the day.
The Spartans got the scoring started in the first inning when junior Jessica Bracamonte hit into a fielder's choice to score freshman Kylene Hopkins from third, giving MSU a 1-0 lead.
The Hawkeyes came back in the top of the fifth with two runs. Jenny Schuelke blasted a two-run homer, bringing in Sam Valentine who was pinch running for Liz Watkins. Schuelke's home run brought the score to 2-1.
Iowa posted its insurance run in the top of the seventh inning when a sacrifice bunt scored Watkins from third to bring the lead to 3-1.
Amanda Zust of Iowa improved her pitching record to 9-5 on the season, while sophomore Lauren Kramer fell to 9-7.
The two teams will be back in action tomorrow (March 28) at Old College Field with the game scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
