EAST LANSING, Mich. - Announced by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) today (March 5), the Michigan State women's cross country team has been honored with its fifth-consecutive All-Academic Team honor. The 2009 season marked MSU's 11th-consecutive appearance in the NCAA Championships. The Spartans are one of 10 schools in the Big Ten to receive this distinction.
"We are proud of the consistent level of academic performance our women's team has held to maintain this consecutive honor," said director of cross country and track & field Walt Drenth. "The women take their role as student-athletes very seriously backing up their success on the course with great success in the classroom."
Individually, Carlie Green becomes the 12th Spartan to receive USTFCCCA All-Academic honors for her achievements both on and off the course. To be eligible, a student-athlete must carry a minimum 3.25 cumulative grade point average and must finish among the top 15 finishers (or top 10 percent) of the field at their respective NCAA regional meet.
"Carlie is the epitome of a student-athlete," said Drenth. "She truly understands the correlation between outcome and effort. We are proud of her success in the classroom and on the course. Knowing Carlie, this will be the first of many individual honors over the remainder of her career at Michigan State."
Green, who is a two-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree, ran to an 11th-place finish at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional with a time of 21:26.06. Green was a strong force for the Spartans throughout the 2009 season, as she placed in the top 15 in four of her five races, including her all-region performance.
The Big Ten had 15 representatives claim the honor, joining the Big 12 and BIG EAST for the most in the nation.
