Softball Regains Winning Ways, Extends Win Streak to Three Games

BOCA RATON, Fla. - Looking to continue its winning ways, the Michigan State softball team (6-10) concluded action at the Miken Classic hosted by Florida Atlantic on Sunday, March 7. The Spartans posted a 2-0 win over Florida A&M in game one, and responded in the second game against Miami (Ohio) with an 8-0 six-inning victory. Freshman Jayme O'Bryant led the team on the day with four RBIs.
In a game that originally started out as a pitchers duel, with each starter beginning with six scoreless innings, the Spartans opened up the first game in the top of the seventh with a two-run inning. O'Bryant knocked in the game-winning runs to score junior Jessica Bracamonte and sophomore Lori Padilla. O'Bryant was able to reach base off a throwing error by shortstop.
Senior Kelly Confer (1-4) earned the win for the Green and White, tossing seven scoreless innings while recording five strikeouts and no walks. Amanda Reyes earned the decision for Florida A&M, recording seven strikeouts in a complete game.
The Spartans remained in control as they took the field for game two against the RedHawks. Bracamonte busted open the game for MSU when she blasted a three-run triple in the bottom of the fourth. After being held scoreless for the first three innings, Bracamonte cleared the bases with her hit to center, bringing in sophomores Brett Williams and Ali Grant and junior Lindsey Hansen.
MSU finally put away Miami in the bottom of the sixth when it scored four more runs, bringing the game to an end due to the eight-run mercy rule. The scoring began when sophomore Melanie Bensema singled up the middle to bring in Hansen from second. O'Byrant recorded her fourth and fifth RBIs when she singled to center, scoring Bensema and Grant from second and third, respectively. Sophomore Lauren Kramer knocked in the final run of the game when she singled up the middle, driving in O'Bryant in from third.
Kramer (4-4) earned the win for the Spartans against the RedHawks. She recorded three strikeouts while allowing only four hits in six innings.
The Spartans will return to action Monday as they remain in Boca Raton for a game against Florida Atlantic at 6 p.m.
