BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Michigan State softball team (17-18, 3-3 Big Ten) closed out its season series with Indiana today (April 11) when it posted a 5-2 win over the Hoosiers. The Spartans were led by sophomore Lauren Kramer who tallied seven strikeouts in seven innings of work, improving to 13-9 on the season on the rubber.
Down 2-1 after the first inning, MSU used the fourth and fifth innings to score a pair of runs, bringing the score to 5-2. Senior Kelly Confer got the mid-innings rally started in the fourth when she drove in junior Jessica Bracamonte off a double. Confer wound up scoring off an error by the right fielder who mishandled a ball hit by sophomore Brett Williams.
Bracamonte continued the Spartan success at the plate when she singled in junior Lindsey Hansen from second. Freshman Kylene Hopkins scored the final MSU run on a double steal with Bracamonte.
Michigan State, for the 19th time this season, kicked off the scoring in the first inning when Hansen blasted a lead-off homer to center to bring the MSU lead to 1-0.
The Hoosiers responded to the Green and White with a two-run inning in the bottom of the opening frame off of back-to-back hits from Cassie Gogreve and Amanda Wagner. Gogreve drove in the first run off a single to left to score Breanna Saucedo. Wagner knocked in the final Indiana run when she hit a single to center, driving in Heather Nelson.
Sara Olson took the loss for Indiana, throwing 6.1 innings of work.
The Spartans return to action on Wednesday, April 14 when they travel to University Park, Pa., for a doubleheader against Penn State. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m.
