
Softball Splits Series with Wisconsin, Wins 11-3

MADISON, Wis. - The Michigan State softball team closed out its 2010 season with an 11-3 win over Wisconsin on Saturday, May 15. The Spartans end the season with a 21-31 record overall and 5-15 in Big Ten games. Today's win marked the Green and White's fourth run-ruled game this season. The Badgers fall to 20-31, 5-13. Freshman Jayme O'Bryant led the Spartan offensive attack over UW, going 3-for-3 with four RBIs and a home run.
MSU got the scoring started in the opening frame with two runs in the first. Junior Lindsey Hansen recorded her 11th homer of the season with a blast to left field, bringing in classmate Jessica Bracamonte who reached base with a lead-off walk.
The Spartans pushed their lead to 4-0 with another two-run inning in the second. Hansen recorded her third and fourth RBIs of the game with a single the scored sophomores Lori Padilla and Brett Williams from second and third, respectively.
Wisconsin got on the board for the first time of the game in the fourth with two runs itself. Dana Rasmussen was the first runner to score for UW when she crossed the plate off a passed ball. Ashley Hanewich scored the second run when she was driven in off a single from Katie Soderberg, making the score 4-2.
Michigan State posted another run in the fifth inning to lead the Badgers 5-2. Freshman Kylene Hopkins pushed across junior Karen Fox, who was running for sophomore pitcher Lauren Kramer, with a single through the left side.
Letty Olivarez knocked in the third run of the game for the Badgers in the fifth inning when she singled to drive in Abby Gregory, bringing the score to 5-3.
The Green and White put the game out of reach with six runs in the sixth inning, to bring its lead to eight. With the bases loaded, back-to-back Spartan batters were walked to bring across the first two runs of the inning. O'Bryant capped off her stellar day at the plate with a grand slam to left field, bringing in Kramer, Hansen and sophomore Ali Grant, making the final score 11-3.
Sophomore Lauren Kramer battled back after dropping the game yesterday to improve her record to 16-19. Kramer ends the game with three strikeouts and one earned run on five Badger hits. Olivarez falls to 13-23 on the year for UW. Olivarez, in 2.0 innings of work, allowed four earned runs on three hits.
Today's game marked the end of the career for senior Kelly Confer.
Notes: Hansen is now ranked fourth all-time in career home runs with 22 total homers ... Hansen's 11 home runs this season also ranks her alone in third place ... Hansen also currently ranks eighth all-time in program history with 57 extra-base hits ... Hansen ends the year with a .368 batting average, the 10th-best single season record in school history ... Hansen improves to 10th all-time in career batting average with a .308 mark ... Kramer is now 11th all-time with 26 career wins as a pitcher ... Kramer's 302 strikeouts ranks her ninth all-time ... Kramer is ninth in single season wins with 19 ... Kramer is also four in single-season strikeouts (177) and sixth in single-season appearances (41).
