EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State cross country program hosted the Spartan Invitational on Friday afternoon at Forest Akers East Golf Course. Seniors Emily MacLeod and Aaron Simoneau paced the fields, claiming first place in their respective races.

The afternoon began with the women's collegiate race. MacLeod crossed first for the second-straight season, finishing with a time of 20:46. Classmate Carlie Green was fourth overall, and third among collegiate runners, in 20:57. Freshman Sara Kroll made an impressive MSU debut in sixth at 21:06. Rounding out the Spartans in the top-10, junior Bekah Smeltzer was ninth with a time of 21:19.
Three additional Spartans posted top-20 showings with senior Emily Langenberg (21:45) in 14th, sophomore Kristen Smith (21:52) in 16th and junior Tiffany Evans (22:03) in 19th.
The men race followed with Simoneau winning his first collegiate race, leading a pack of seven Spartans in the top-10. Simoneau crossed in 24:28, one second ahead of unattached runner Nick Willis. Sophomore Ben Miller was third overall, second among collegians, with a time of 24:43. Senior Spencer Beatty was fifth, just two seconds behind Miller at 24:45.
Four MSU runners finished in succession from seventh to 10th, led by senior Patrick Grosskopf with a time of 24:53. Classmate Alex Russeau was one second behind Grosskopf, while freshman Sherod Hardt was one second back of Russeau. Sophomore Isaiah VanDoorne was 10th in an even 25:00. Junior Joe Dimambro was 12th in 25:06.
