EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State women's golfer Caroline Powers has been selected to represent the United States at the 2011 World University Golf Championship held in Shenzhen, China in August. The 14th annual event, which is part of the World University Games, is sponsored by the International University Sports Federation.
Last year's golf competition featured golfers from Italy, Spain, France, Ireland, Great Britain, Canada, Germany, Russia and Taiwan, as well as the United States. The event features individual competition and team competition. Each country can take five female players: three play as the team, counting the best two scores each day over a total of 72 holes for the tournament, while the other two play for medalist honors as individuals.
Powers was one of five collegiate golfers chosen from the United States. She will be joined by Catherine O'Donnell of North Carolina, Tessa Teachman of LSU, Emily Talley of Colorado, and Brooke Beeler of TCU.
Only a sophomore, Powers finished in the top 10 in three of MSU's four fall tournaments, including a third-place showing at the Mary Fossum Invitational. She leads the team this season with a 72.5 scoring average and enters the spring ranked 29th in the nation according to the Golfweek/Sagarin ratings. In her first year, Powers established a Michigan State freshman record with her 76.0 average.
Powers will be the seventh player from the Spartan women's golf program to participate in the World University Golf Championship, joining Lisa Marino (1987), Kasey Gant (1998), Allison Fouch (2002), Sarah Martin (2004), Sara Brown (2006) and Laura Kueny (2010).
