EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State wrestling team defeated Lock Haven, Oakland and Eastern Michigan at the second annual Spartan Duals Saturday at Jenison Field House to improve to 7-1 on the season. The Spartans beat Lock Haven in the first dual of the day, 28-12, shut out Oakland, 45-0, and rallied to top Eastern Michigan, 19-15.
Eric Olanowski (125), Dan Osterman (149) and 20th-ranked Tyler Dickenson (197) led the way for Michigan State by winning all three of their matches in the event, while Ben Boudro (165), Curran Jacobs (174) and Ian Hinton (184) each recorded two wins.
"Particularly against Eastern Michigan, we just found a way to win," said head coach Tom Minkel. "Eastern has a very good team and I think they were highly motivated. We were a little short handed. What we were really pleased about is that we found a way to get it done. We had some nice wins in some really critical positions. I thought it was a gritty performance today and I was pleased with the outcome."
In the opening dual for Michigan State, the Spartans won the final five matches to come back and defeat Lock Haven. Olanowski recorded the first of his three victories on the day with an 8-2 decision over Nick Hyatt at 125 pounds, but the Bald Eagles (2-3) won at 133 and 141 to go up, 9-3. Following Osterman's victory at 149 pounds, Lock Haven won its third match of the dual as Seth Creasy produced an 8-3 decision over Collin Dozier at 157 to make it 12-6 in favor of the Bald Eagles.
The upper weights proved to be the difference, however, as the Spartans compiled 19 points in the last five bouts to win handily, 28-12. Boudro started the run at 165 with a 4-0 win over Dylan Caprio. At 174, Jacobs and Michael Khoury were tied at 3 entering the final period, but Jacobs went on a scoring barrage in the final two minutes, recording a quick reversal, two takedowns, including near-fall points, and a 2:18 riding-time advantage to come away with an impressive 13-5 major decision.
"One thing about Curran, he has a lot of confidence, and he just goes hard," said Minkel. "He just finds a way to stay with it, no matter what the score is. That was a really critical win for us."
Ian Hinton also recorded a major decision with a 9-1 victory over Jacob Bachman at 184 pounds, while Dickenson notched his second technical fall of the season with a dominating 15-0 win in 5:08 at 197. Mike McClure finished the dual off by pinning Harry Turner in just 51 seconds in the heavyweight match.
In the second round, Michigan State shut out Oakland, 45-0. Olanowski started the dual off strong against Jimmy Schroader in the opening match at 125, earning both a takedown and a near fall in the first period to go up 4-0. Olanowski kept the pressure on in the second period, producing another takedown and near-fall points for a 9-0 lead. A reversal in the third and riding time gave Olanowski the 12-0 victory.
Chris Lyon, at 133 pounds, registered his first career dual victory with a 3-0 shutout over Courtney Johnson and increased MSU's lead to 7-0.
At 141, Joel Trombly jumped out to a quick start for Michigan State, earning a takedown and two near-falls in the first period against Isaac Morisette, giving him a 6-0 lead. A pair of reverses by each wrestler made it 8-2 in favor of Trombly to start the third. Trombly allowed a takedown in the final period, but it wasn't enough for Moreisette and the Grizzlies, as Trombly won the match a score of 9-4.
The 149-pound match started with a quick takedown by Osterman, giving him a 2-0 lead; however, the lead did not last long, as Austin Sanchez was able to reverse and tie the score at 2. Osterman manipulated a reversal of his own later in the first, and added a near fall with 1:15 to go in the period to give himself a 7-2 lead going into the second. Osterman recorded another reversal and tacked on a point for stalling by Sanchez to go up, 10-7, and didn't let up in the third, earning both a takedown and a near fall in the third period to close out with a 16-2 major decision.
Wrestling for the first time at 157 pounds due to injuries in the Spartan lineup, Dozier came away with a 16-6 major decision over Brian Hittle. Dozier recorded a takedown, a reversal and near-fall points all in the first to take a 7-3 lead. In the third, Dozier continued to pile on the points, notching two escapes, a takedown, and a near fall to win 16-6.
Two Spartans made their debuts in the lineup in the next two bouts: Bobby Nash at 165 pounds, and Nick Kaczanowski at 174 pounds. Both came away with convincing victories.
Nash looked ready to go in his first career dual match with a takedown just 15 seconds in, and went on to record a 9-2 victory. Kaczanowski wasted no time getting to work, earning a quick takedown of Zack Voller before getting a pin just 58 seconds into the match.
Oakland then forfeited the 184, 197, and heavyweight divisions to put the final at 45-0.
In the third and most competitive dual of the afternoon, the Spartans rallied from a 9-3 deficit to defeat Eastern Michigan (4-5), 19-15.
Olanowski got things started by edging Jared Germaine in the 125-pound bout, 5-4, in a match that went down to the wire. Olanowski took a 4-1 lead into the third period, but Germaine bounced back with an escape and takedown, tying the score at 4. Olanowski then escaped to reclaim the lead at 5-4. In the final seconds, Germaine was nearly in position for a takedown, but Olanowski held him off just long enough until time expired, giving Spartans the 5-4 win.
The lead was shortlived as Filiberto Colon pinned Lyon in 1:20 at 133 pounds, followed by an 8-5 decision by Mike LeHolm over Trombly at 141.
Osterman halted the two-match winning streak for EMU by producing a 15-7 major decision at 149 pounds against Lester France. Osterman recorded his fourth and final takedown of the match with 14 seconds left, then tacked on a riding-time point to earn his sixth major decision of the season.
After Dozier fell in the 157 bout to Aaron Sulzer, 2-1, the foursome of Boudro, Jacobs, Hinton and Dickenson rattled off a four-match run to put the Eagles away. Boudro came up with a key win at 165, preventing Eastern Michigan from extending its lead. The senior had a quick takedown in the first, escaped to start the third, and totaled 1:49 of riding time to get past Nick Hendrick, 4-1.
"I was really impressed with the way we wrestled," said Boudro. "One thing I noticed from other meets is that our coaches told us to take our conditioning to another level. And that's what we did. When I was warming up watching the lower weights, everyone was just attacking nonstop, and that got me pumped me and made me attack out there."
Jacobs again had a big third period in the EMU dual, this time producing a reversal and two takedowns, in addition to nearly four minutes of riding time, for the 9-3 win over Chris Eggert. In his two duals on the day, Jacobs outscored his opponents 15-4 in the third period.
Hinton got out to a 5-1 lead after the first period in his match at 184 pounds against Khodor Hoballah, and recorded two more takedowns in the third for a 9-2 victory.
Dickenson sealed the win for Michigan State with his 6-5 win over Nick Whittenburg at 197. Clinging to a 1-0 advantage after two periods, Dickenson fell behind on a reversal 15 seconds into the third; however, he quickly tied it at 2 with an escape just seconds later. He regained the lead with a takedown at the 1:06 mark, but an escape and a stalling point made it 4-4. With 15 seconds remaining, Dickenson came up with a clutch takedown to go up 6-4, and although he allowed an escape, he held on for the 6-5 victory.
In the final match of the dual, David Wade shut out McClure, 2-0.
The Michigan State wrestling team returns to action Friday, Jan. 14 to take on West Virginia in Morgantown, W.V., at 7:30 p.m.
