WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind.- Michigan State wrestling fell to Purdue, 22-17, Friday night in Holloway Gymnasium. The Spartans won five matches, highlighted by Tyler Dickenson's victory over No. 12 A.J. Kissel at 197 pounds.
"Once again we won five matches and somehow the dual got away from us," head coach Tom Minkel said. "It was a really good dual, it just seemed like one of those matches where if something could go wrong, it would."
The match got underway in the 165-pound weight class and senior David Cheza took a 6-2 decision over Kyle Mosier of Purdue. The match was knotted 2-2 heading into the third but Cheza came away with an escape, a takedown and added riding time in the third to get the win for Michigan State.
Curran Jacobs put the Spartans up by six after an 11-10 decision over Drake Stein at 174 pounds. Jacobs was up 4-2 after the second period before both wrestled a rampant third period. Jacobs had a takedown with only five seconds remaining and added riding time for the win.
At 184 pounds Braden Atwood pinned Ian Hinton in 4:11 to get the Boilermakers on the board.
Tyler Dickenson took down No. 12 A.J. Kissel of Purdue, 4-2. Dickenson was down 2-1 and then recorded an escape and a takedown late in the third period to upset Kissel, as Michigan State went up 9-6.
"That was a really impressive dual for Tyler," Minkel said. "Tyler has worked very hard and made some great improvements and great strides. Anytime that you beat someone that is ranked in the top dozen it is significant. That was a nice win for him."
Purdue kept the pressure on in the heavyweight division; Steve Andrus lost a 4-3 decision to Roger Vukobratovich of Purdue. Vukobratovich had a takedown with only one second left in the match.
Brenan Lyon broke the tie for the Spartans with a 9-1 major decision over Luke Schroeder at 125 pounds. Lyon had an escape, a takedown, three near-fall points and riding time all in the third period to control the match.
The Boilermakers countered with a major decision of their own, as No. 7 Cashé Quiroga beat Brandon Fifield, 19-7, to tie the dual at 13.
Purdue won the next two matches to take control of the dual. Brandon Nelson won by fall over Brian Gibbs in 6:25 at 141 pounds, and Dan Osterman lost a tough 4-3 decision to Ivan Lopuchanski at 149 pounds.
Anthony Jones Jr. won a major decision over Tommy Churchard 12-3 at 157 pounds to conclude the dual, but Purdue hung on to win, 22-17.
The Spartans will be off next week for finals and are back in action Dec. 18 at the Reno Tournament of Champions in Reno, Nev.
