No. 23 Purdue Defeats Spartan Wrestling, 22-9

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - No. 23 Purdue defeated the Michigan State wrestling team, 22-9, Sunday afternoon at Holloway Gymnasium. In the 184-pound match, Ian Hinton upset eighth-ranked A.J. Kissel with a 5-3 sudden victory, while Dan Osterman (149) and Joe Rizqallah (heavyweight) also recorded victories for the Spartans.
Michigan State (9-7, 1-6 Big Ten) got off to a fast start as Dan Osterman notched a 7-2 decision over Sam Patacil at 149 pounds. The victory gave Osterman his team-leading 22nd win of the season.
Purdue (7-8-1, 2-5) responded by winning the next three matches, building a 9-3 lead. Colton Salazar edged Sean McMurray at 157 pounds, 2-1, Kyle Mosier recorded a 10-4 decision over Bobby Nash at 165, and No. 8 Luke Manuel defeated Curran Jacobs at 174, 7-5.
At 184 pounds, Hinton beat his third ranked opponent of the season with a 5-3 sudden victory over No. 8 Kissel. Scoreless after the first two periods, Hinton and Kissel each had takedowns and escapes in the third to make it 3-3. Hinton recorded the match-winning takedown in the sudden victory period to get the 5-3 win. Hinton has now won six of his last seven dual matches.
Following Hinton's big win, Purdue's 10th-ranked Logan Brown halted MSU's momentum with a 9-4 major decision against Tyler Dickenson in the 197-pound match.
MSU cut the Boilermaker lead to 12-9 as No. 20 Joe Rizqallah had a 7-2 decision over Alex White at heavyweight. Rizqallah collected three takedowns as he improved to 7-1 in dual matches.
It was as close as the Spartans would get, however, as Purdue won the final three bouts to win the dual, 22-9. Eric Olanowski lost to Camden Eppert at 125, 10-5, Chris Lyon fell in a 7-3 decision to Akif Eren at 133, and Levi Stace dropped a 19-7 major decision to Jake Fleckenstein at 141.
Michigan State returns to action Friday, Feb. 18 as the Spartans host No. 10 Michigan at 7 p.m. in Jenison Field House.
