
Women's Tennis Earns First Road Win of Season Over Western Michigan, 6-1

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Michigan State women's tennis team topped in-state rival Western Michigan, 6-1, on Friday, Feb. 18 in Kalamazoo, Mich. The match marked MSU's first road competition of the season as it moves to 6-1 overall on the year.
"This is a great win for us this evening," said MSU head coach Simone Jardim. "Tonight was definitely a battle all match long, but it was nice to see us play with more confidence than we had against Western Michigan in the past. I am extremely proud of every one of the girls tonight as this is the first win over the Broncos in several years. This is a huge win for us and will certainly help us as we continue on this season.
Amy Barton and Marina Bohrer led MSU in the No. 1 doubles position with an 8-3 win over April Kerr and Amanda Moccia. Whitney Wilson and Michaela Silesova topped Maria Nivia and Nini Sujashvili at No. 2 doubles, 8-6. Earning the lone WMU doubles win was Maggie Remynse and Jill Pasunink over Nicole Herzog and Dana Guentert, 9-8.
After winning their seventh-straight doubles point, the Spartans wrapped up action with five of six singles wins. Barton paced MSU at the No. 1 position with a 1-6, 6-4, 6-2 win over Remynse. Valentina Rusakova earned a 6-7, 6-2, 6-2 win over Nuvia at No. 2 singles. Bohrer earned the most convincing win of the day when she posted a 6-0, 6-0 win over Pastunink in the No. 3 slot.
Sujashvili earned the lone point for WMU when she topped Wilson, 6-4. 4-6, 7-6 (3), at No. 4 singles. Guentert and Silesova rounded out MSU's single wins over the Broncos. Guentert topped Moccia at No. 5 (7-5, 6-1), while Silesova topped Shustova at No. 6 singles (6-2, 4-6, 6-2).
The Spartans close out the weekend's matches on Saturday, Feb. 19 with a 12 p.m. contest against Cleveland State at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility.
