NCAA Wrestling Championships Update - Session Two

PHILADELPHIA - In the second session of the NCAA Wrestling Championships Thursday night at the Wells Fargo Center, 197-pounder Tyler Dickenson won his consolation match, but Curran Jacobs (174) and Joe Rizqallah (heavyweight) lost in their second-round matches. In addition, Dan Osterman (149) and Sean McMurray (157) were eliminated with losses in the consolation bracket.
Following his first-round upset over 11th-seeded Austin Meys of Lehigh, Jacobs fell to sixth-seeded Ben Bennett of Central Michigan by major decision, 16-2, in the second round. The junior from Owosso, Mich., will face Ryan Patrovich of Hofstra on Friday in the consolation round.
Rizqallah was tied with Arizona State's Levi Cooper 2-2 after two periods, but was pinned with 36 seconds left in the third. Cooper upset No. 4 seed Dominick Russo of Rutgers in the first round. Rizqallah, who beat Eastern Michigan's David Wade in his first match, will wrestle Iowa State's Kyle Simonson on Friday.
Dickenson bounced back after a tough first-round loss with a resounding 8-0 major decision over Arizona State's Luke Macchiaroli. The St. Johns, Mich., native took control right from the start, getting a takedown and three near-fall points in the first period, followed by two more near-fall points in the second. Dickenson tacked on a riding time point after collecting a 2:33 advantage to walk off with an 8-0 win. In session three on Friday, Dickenson will match up against No. 12 seed Zack Giesen of Stanford.
Osterman suffered his second straight heartbreaking defeat, again losing in overtime, to get eliminated from the 149-pound bracket. The sophomore lost in sudden victory in the afternoon session, and found himself in another overtime match in the evening. Osterman and Zac Cibula of Rider battled until the second overtime and the score remained 7-7, but Cibula pulled out the win by compiling 1:09 of riding time.
At 157 pounds, Sean McMurray was eliminated by Bryan Deutsch of Northern Illinois by dropping a 5-0 decision.
Dickenson, Jacobs and Rizqallah will compete in the consolation second round Friday morning in session three of the NCAA Championships, which begin at 10:30 a.m. Live coverage of the event is available at ESPN3.com and live results are available at msuspartans.com via the NWCA Scorebook.
