PHILADELPHIA - Spartan wrestlers Curran Jacobs (174 pounds), Tyler Dickenson (197) and Joe Rizqallah (heavyweight) were eliminated from the NCAA Wrestling Championships after dropping consolation second-round matches in Friday's third session at the Wells Fargo Center. All three went 1-2 in the tournament.
Jacobs, who upset 11th-seeded Austin Meys of Lehigh by major decision, 13-5, in his first-round match, fell into the consolation round after losing to sixth-seeded Ben Bennett of Central Michigan in Thursday night's second-round matchup.
On Friday, Jacobs got off to a quick start with an early takedown against Ryan Patrovich of Hofstra in the first period, and the score was tied 3-3 after the first three minutes; however, Patrovich took a 6-3 lead after the second period with an escape and a takedown. Jacobs had two escapes in the third, but Patrovich added another takedown and a riding time point to get the 9-5 decision.
In his first full year in the starting lineup, Jacobs finishes his junior season with a 25-13 record; the 25 wins were the most on the team.
Dickenson lost his first-round match in session one on Thursday, but came back with a convincing 8-1 major decision last night over Arizona State's Luke Macchiaroli. The St. John's, Mich., native advanced in the bracket to face No. 12 seed Zack Giesen of Stanford.
Giesen took command of the match early with a takedown and near-fall points in the first to go up 5-0. Giesen extended his lead with an escape in the second and a takedown in the third; Dickenson got on the board with an escape later in the period. Giesen compiled a riding time advantage of 3:06 to earn the 9-1 major decision.
Dickenson closes out his junior season with a record of 23-17.
At heavyweight, Rizqallah went 1-1 on the first day of the championships with a first-round win over Eastern Michigan's David Wade before getting pinned by Arizona State's Levi Cooper in the second round.
In the consolation second round, Rizqallah battled back and forth with Iowa State's Kyle Simonson, but eventually lost by fall at the 6:03 mark in the match. Rizqallah took an early lead with a takedown in the first period and led 2-1 after the first; however, Simonson responded with a reversal in the second to take a 3-2 advantage. Choosing to start the third period in neutral, Rizqallah recorded a takedown to go up, 4-3, but a Simonson escape tied it back at 4. Simonson then took down Rizqallah and got the pin with 57 seconds in the match.
Rizqallah finishes his first year as a starter with a 21-14 record.
Michigan State qualified five wrestlers for the NCAA Championships. Sophomore Dan Osterman (149 pounds) and freshman Sean McMurray (157) were eliminated from the bracket on day one.
The Spartans will field an experienced team in 2011-12, as MSU will feature nine wrestlers who have qualified for the NCAA Championships during their career. In addition to Dickenson, Jacobs, McMurray, Osterman and Rizqallah, David Cheza and Anthony Jones Jr. will be returning to the lineup after sitting out with injuries this season, while two-time NCAA qualifier Ian Hinton and one-time qualifier Eric Olanowski will also be back for their senior seasons.
