The No. 22 Michigan State women's golf team will compete in its final regular-season tournament this weekend (April 16-17) at the 31st annual Lady Buckeye Invitational in Columbus, Ohio. The 12-team tournament will be held at the par 72, 6,275-yard Scarlet Course at The Ohio State University Golf Club.
The Spartans are coming off a 10th place finish at the Liz Murphey Invitational, which featured a unique scoring system that counted the top-four scores from each hole, rather than the top-four scores from each round. Twelve of the 23 teams in the tournament were ranked in the Golfweek Top 30.
For the sixth time this season, sophomore Caroline Powers was the top finisher for MSU with an 8-over 224, good for 15th place. Powers owns a 73.75 scoring average this season, which is on pace to become the all-time record in Michigan State single-season history. Laura Kueny's average of 73.85 in 2009-10 currently holds the top spot in the record books. Powers is ranked No. 31 in the nation by Golfweek heading into the weekend.
In addition to Powers, the Spartan lineup will feature seniors Aimee Neff and Natalie Brehm, junior Lindsey Solberg, and freshmen Christine Meier and Allyssa Ferrell.
This weekend's tournament is the final tune up for Michigan State before the Big Ten Championships April 22-24 in Glencoe, Ill.
"We feel great about this weekend," said Spartan head coach Stacy Slobodnik-Stoll. "It's always one of our favorites, having the opportunity to play the Scarlet (Course). It's a great field and mostly Big Ten teams, so it's a little bit of a preview as to what we're going to see next weekend at the Big Ten Championships. I think it will be a great warm up to see what we really need to focus on."
Last year, Kueny earned medalist honors at the Lady Buckeye Invitational and the Spartans took second place.
Live results of the entire tournament will be available at www.golfstat.com. There will be 36 holes on Saturday, and 18 on Sunday.
