
Track & Field Places Second at Indiana Invitational

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Michigan State track & field team finished second at the Indiana Invitational hosted by the Hoosiers on Sunday, April 17 in Bloomington, Ind. The women maintained second place, improving to 201 points, while the men moved into second on the final day with a total of 161. Freshman Ashley Stacey highlighted the final day of action, as she set the meet record in the women's long jump with a personal-high of 6.24m, a mark which was only 0.05m off of MSU's school record.
"Overall, the team did a nice job coming back today," said MSU director of track & field and cross country Walt Drenth. "I thought we had an average start yesterday with some nice individual finishes, but I was really pleased with the way the whole team closed out the competition. We talked about the importance of this meeting being a scored meet and just doing what we were capable of doing, and I thought we did that this weekend."
Taking home both the women's and men's team crown was IU with 203.5 and 189 points, respectively. Missouri was third on the women's side (135 points) and fourth in the men's competition (153 points). Indiana State was third on the men's side and fourth on the women's with 159 and 130.5 points, respectively.
As a team, MSU ended the day with eight first-place marks to improve its weekend total to 11.
In the long jump, Stacey was joined by junior Marva Goodson, who was third with a career-high leap of 5.67m, and junior Katie Guikema, who followed in fourth with a career-best 5.64m jump. Sophomore Maggie Smith rounded out the top five in fifth with a personal-best 5.52m mark.
Stacey captured her second individual crown of the day when she finished tops in the triple jump with a leap of 12.02m. Junior Jessica Scherting placed fifth overall, as she turned in personal-high leap of 11.31m.
Sophomore Kurt Schneider represented the men in the long jump, as he finished the competition in fourth-place with a leap of 6.85m.
Junior Becca Buchholtz claimed an individual crown in the high jump with a height of 1.78m. Scherting joined Buchholtz in the high jump, as she placed fourth with a jump of 1.70m, a mark which ties her season high.
Junior Kevin Jackson led the Green and White on the men's side of the high jump, placing second. Jackson posted a jump of 2.10m. Both Schneider and junior Cliff Miller shared the fourth-place mark with identical 2.05m heights.
Freshman Zack Hill captured the men's shot put crown with a toss of 17.64m. Hill narrowly edged teammate junior Aaron Ide who finished third with a hurl of 16.85m.
Sophomores Beth Rohl and Lonnie Pugh gave the Spartans a sweep of the discus throw, as Rohl won the women's event and Pugh the men's. Rohl posted a season-best toss of 54.34m while Pugh finished with a season-high 54. 65m.
Seniors Ashley Lawrence and Anthony Agrusa joined Rohl and Pugh in the discus throws. Lawrence placed second with a toss of 50.33m and Agrusa turned in a season-high 47.57m mark.
Sophomore Alysson Bodenbach placed first in the 400m dash with a clocked time of 56.04. Classmate Jaelynn Pryor placed fifth overall when she finished in 57.05.
Junior Leslie Aririguzo led a pair of Spartan runners in the 100m hurdles with her top time of 13.81 in the event. Sophomore Chelsea Ross finished second overall, as she turned in a career-best time of 14.27.
Senior Erica Mann and Aririguzo placed second and third for MSU in the 100m dash, respectively. Mann clocked in at 12.09, as Aririguzo finished in a season-best time of 12.16.
Following the 100m dash, Mann was third in the 200m dash with a time of 25.24. Bodenbach joined Mann in the event with a fifth-place 25.32 time.
Senior Yury Ratomski clocked in a 21.42 in the men's 200m dash to finish second overall in the event. Ratomski was also runner-up in the 400m dash, as he finished with a career-best time of 47.25.
Schneider competed in the 100m hurdles and turned in a career-best time of 14.82 for second place. Miller followed with a fourth-place finish of 14.85, also a career-best time.
Pryor was the top Spartan in the 400m hurdles, as she crossed with a time of 1:01.87.
Junior Joe Banyai placed second overall in the 800m run with a time of 1:52.25. Freshman Ben Miller finished the heat, as he crossed in third in 1:52.27.
Junior Tiffany Evans clocked a career-best 10:40.43 in the 3000m steeplechase to place third overall. On the men's side, junior Aaron Simoneau was fourth with a time of 9:03.27. Simoneau edged senior Spencer Beatty who was fifth with a 9:05.78 mark.
In the team's first 4x400m relay of the outdoor season, Bodenbach, Pryor, Mann and senior Charelise Davis turned in a time of 3:48.86 to place third in the event.
The men also competed in the relay for the first time this season with Banyai, Ratomski, junior Durant Crum and Miller placing fourth. The MSU relay team finished in 3:19.57.
The Spartans continue their outdoor season when members of the team will travel to both the EMU Twilight in Ypsilanti, Mich., and the Jesse Owens Classic in Columbus, Ohio. Action at EMU is scheduled to run from Friday-Saturday, April 22-23, while the Jessie Owens Classic will compete Saturday-Sunday, April 23-24.
