EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State senior center fielder Brandon Eckerle has been named to the Capital One Academic All-District 4 First Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Eckerle, who was named a third-team Academic All-American last year, is now eligible for Academic All-America honors in 2011. The Academic All-America teams will be announced later this month.
Eckerle owns a 3.98 GPA in general business administration/pre-law and leads the Big Ten with a .389 batting average. He also leads the team with 22 multi-hit games and is currently fourth in MSU history with 235 career hits, just 11 shy of becoming the school's all-time hits leader.
In addition, the Durand, Mich., native was recently named one of 10 finalists for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award; to be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence - community, classroom, character and competition.
Eckerle has started every game in center field this season for the Spartans and has helped lead the team to a 27-14 record, including a 10-5 mark in Big Ten play, which is currently tied for Purdue for first place in the conference standings. MSU hosts Purdue this weekend in a three-game series at McLane Baseball Stadium.
