Throughout the fall of 2011, the Spartan men's soccer programs provided free youth soccer clinics for boys and girls ranging from ages 5 - 13 who are members of the Capital Area Soccer League (CASL).
MSU head coach Damon Rensing, assistant coaches Kylie Stannard and Ben Pirmann, as well as members of the MSU men's team provided several one-hour clinics in various communities (Lansing, East Lansing, Mason, Haslett, Williamston, Eaton Rapids, Grand Ledge, and St. Johns). The program organized these clinics, which included basic soccer skills such as dribbling, passing, shooting, heading, juggling, tricks, and small-sided games. This fall alone, the Spartan soccer program worked with more than 600 youth soccer players in and around the greater Lansing area.
" It is important that our players and staff realize that they are role models for the area's youth soccer players," said Rensing. "It was great to get out to the local communities and give back to the game that has given us so much. Our goal is to make a positive impact on these young boys and girls not only in soccer, but academics and personal development as well. It's really important to acknowledge and thank these local youth coaches who volunteer some much time and effort for these kids. "
The clinics were arranged through CASL Executive Director, and MSU soccer club coach, Scott Dane. Rensing strongly believes that engaging the community with the MSU student-athletes to give back to the sport that has been so good to them is important, as well as supporting our local community and educate the youth players in the area on the game that everyone in the soccer program is so passionate about.
"CASL is extremely pleased that the MSU Soccer Program is willing to be involved in our local communities," said Dane. " MSU soccer has provided great role models for our young players and has created an excitement for the game. It's awesome that the coaches and players are willing to give back."
