EAST LANSING, Mich. - Sophomore guard Branden Dawson led No. 14 Michigan State with 16 points in its 85-57 win over Northwood (Fla.) in the exhibition opener Tuesday.
Dawson scored six of his points in the first two minutes, putting the first points on the scoreboard for the Spartans. Freshman guard Gary Harris scored 14 points in his first game wearing the Green and White. Senior captain Derrick Nix had 13 points for MSU. Guard Travis Trice added 12 points, making seven of his nine shots, including two from outside the arc. Junior Adreian Payne and Nix both recorded eight rebounds for MSU.
After leading by only six at the half, the Spartans went on a 12-0 run at the beginning of the second half. MSU shot 50.7% from the field in the Tuesday night game. Michigan State out-rebounded Northwood by a 52-35 margin in the game.
Leading the Seahawks was Masse Doumbe with 20 points and 14 rebounds. Tyrone Davis tallied five assists for Northwood.
MSU continues its exhibition matchups against St. Cloud State on Friday, Nov. 2, at 8:30 p.m. in the Breslin Center. The Spartans will begin their regular season against the University of Connecticut in the Armed Forces Classic at Ramstein Air Base, Germany, on Nov. 9.
