
Men's Tennis Continues Win Streak

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State men's tennis team (14-8, 3-3) continued their Big Ten winning streak Sunday afternoon as they defeated Purdue, 6-1, in their second Big Ten win of the weekend. The Spartans were coming off a 5-2 win over Indiana Saturday afternoon (March 31) before defeating the Boilermakers. Purdue picked up the doubles point to begin the day but the Spartans came back winning all six singles points.
Purdue came away with the first point of the day as they won two out of the three doubles matches. On court three Kovacs and Poziomski defeated Denis Bogatov and Doug Zade 8-2 to win the first match. The Spartans then came back with a win on court two as Harry Jadun and Austin Brooks beat Krocsko and Tatarczyk 8-4. The final doubles match, on court one, was a close back and forth game that had to be decided in a tight tie breaker. Purdue narrowly came out with the win by a score of 8-8 (7-3) as Dujovne and Acosta defeated Aaron Pfister and Drew Lied, marking Purdue's first and only point of the day.
MSU stepped up their play in singles and were able to sweep all six matches. The first to win was Gijs Linders on court six as he came away with a quick 6-2, 6-2 decision over Hawkins. Next, on court one, Aaron Pfister earned his second singles victory of the weekend, with a win over Tatarczyk, 6-4, 6-1. In the number four singles spot, Drew Lied defeated Krocsko in three sets 6-2, 3-6, 6-1.
Continuing the winning streak for the Spartans was Austin Brooks. He came away victorious on court five with a close 6-2, 7-5 win over Dujovne. The last two matches went into three sets with both final sets being 10-point tie-breakers due to the match already being decided. On court three, Ronnie Hulewicz picked up his second singles win in two days, topping Purdue's Acosta 6-3, 6-7, 1-0 (10-8) followed by a win for Denis Bogatov over Kovacs 4-6, 7-6, 1-0 (10-6) on court two.
The Spartans return to action next weekend as they hit the road to take on Northwestern and Illinois. MSU will first head to Evanston, Ill. to take on the Wildcats on Friday, April 6 at 1:30 p.m. at the Vandy Christie Tennis Center. They will then travel to Champaign, Ill. on Saturday, April 7 to take on the Fighting Illini at 1:00 p.m. at the Khan Outdoor Tennis Complex.
