Spartans Split Day at FAU Invite

BOCA RATON, Fla. - Michigan State softball split the second day of the Florida Atlantic Invitational. MSU was edged out by Kansas, 1-0, before picking up a 1-0 win against tournament host Florida Atlantic University.
In the first game, the game was scoreless until the bottom of the seventh inning when the Jayhawks (16-5) posted a run to take the win. Chanin Naudin hit a double to right center and advanced to third base on a wild pitch. To send Naudin home for the walk-off win, Ashley Newman hit a sacrifice fly out.
Senior Kylene Hopkins was 2-for-3 to lead the Spartan offense.
On the mound, junior Kelly Smith pitched 6 1/3 innings allowing only one run and struck out six at the plate.
The second game against FAU (10-14) was in similar fashion; MSU (14-10) broke open the game in the bottom of the sixth scoring the lone run of the game. Hopkins started the inning with a single to left field and advanced to second base on a passed ball. Sophomore McKinzie Freimuth sacrifice bunted to send Hopkins to third base. Next up, senior Jayme O'Bryant singled to the left side to tally an RBI as Hopkins scored.
O'Bryant was 2-for-3 at bat, while Hopkins and sophomore Ellie Stoffer went 1-for-3.
Smith (11-5) shut down the Owls not giving up a single run and compiled eight strikeouts in a complete game.
The Spartans finish up their Spring Break trip Saturday, March 9, at 11 a.m. against UL-Monroe.
