
Softball Drops Series Finale to Illinois

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State softball fell, 10-0, to Illinois on Sunday afternoon at Secchia Stadium. Sophomore McKinzie Freimuth went 2-for-3 to lead the Spartans at the plate.
In the top of the second inning, Illinois scored three runs, two off of a home run to left field. The Fighting Illini (19-25, 9-11 Big Ten) increased their lead to 6-0 with three runs in the top of the third.
Remeny Perez hit a grand slam in the top of the sixth to finalize the score at 10-0.
Splitting time on the mound were junior Kelly Smith, freshman Dani Goranson and sophomore Carly Nielsen. Smith (16-14) started off in the circle and allowed six runs, all earned, in 2 2/3 innings pitched. Coming in during the third inning, Goranson gave up four runs, all earned. Closing the game was Nielsen in the top of the sixth, pitching 1/3 of an inning.
Senior Kylene Hopkins and sophomore Ellie Stoffer went 1-for-2 for MSU.
Michigan State's senior class, Raime Cronkhite, Kylene Hopkins, Jayme O'Bryant and Jenny Ramsaier, was recognized prior to the game.
The Spartans (21-23, 7-9) will face Eastern Michigan on Wednesday, May 1, at 5 p.m. in their final home game of the season at Secchia Stadium.
