Softball Suffers Loss to Purdue

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Michigan State softball fell for the first time in conference play this season to Purdue on Saturday afternoon at the Boilermaker Softball Complex. The Spartans (20-14, 6-1) were outlasted as the Boilermakers won, 7-2. Freshman Dani Goranson spent 3 1/3 innings in the circle and tallied four strikeouts. Sophomore McKinzie Freimuth notched one RBI and went 3-for-4 to lead the MSU offense.

Purdue (15-21, 3-5) scored its first run in the bottom of the first. The Boilermakers then gained momentum with one run in the bottom of the third and four in the bottom of the fourth to lead MSU, 6-0.

Michigan State scored both of its runs in the top of the sixth. Sophomore Alyssa McBride walked and proceeded to score after Freimuth's triple down the right field line. With a fielding error by Purdue's second baseman, senior Kylene Hopkins reached first and Freimuth crossed the plate for a Spartan run.

Purdue answered the MSU runs with its seventh run in the bottom of the sixth inning, to finalize the score at 7-2.

Sharing time on the mound for the Spartans were Goranson (3-6) and sophomore Carly Nielsen. Goranson allowed four runs, three earned, while Nielsen saw three runs, all earned.

Lilly Fecho picked up the win for Purdue as she improved her record to 6-11.

The Spartans finish their series with the Boilermakers on Sunday, April 7, at 1 p.m.
