
Dube and Roy Cap Strong Start for Spartans

MINEAPOLIS, Minn. -- The Michigan State men's tennis team had a strong start to the Big Ten Indoor Championships on Friday.
Friday's action had two flights of doubles. The Spartans were in the finals for both brackets.
Mac Roy and Michael Dube finished undefeated in the Flight B bracket. The duo defeated the pair of Ruben Weber and Matic Spec from Minnesota, 8-7 (8). Dube and Roy also had victories over Wisconsin's Michael Sinha and Darius Mackenzie (8-5) in the semifinals, and the pair of Charlie Shin and Chris Schindler of Nebraska (8-3) in the first round.
In the Flight A championship, Harry Jadun and John Patrick Mullane fell to Iowa's Matt Hagan and Dominic Patrick, 8-4. In the semifinals, Jadun and Mullane knocked off Jack Hamburg and Mathieu Froment of Minnesota, who were ranked No. 11 nationally, 8-6. Jadun and Mullane also had a victory over Iowa's pair of Jake Jacoby and Josh Silverstein in the first round, 8-4.
Overall, the Spartans were 10-4 on the day.
In the Flight A bracket, Brett Forman and Gijs Linders lost their opening match to Bradford Zitsch and Dusty Boyer of Nebraska, 8-4. Forman and Linders went on to defeat Wisconsin's Jose Carranza and John Zordani, 8-3, as well as Marc Herrmann and Chris Hobgarski of Nebraska, 8-2 in consolation play. Forman and Linders fell to Nebraska's duo of Scott Elsass and Linus Erhart, 8-5.
Alexander Kim and Doug Zade won their Flight B opening round match over Court Clark and Vasileios Stavropoulus of Nebraska, crushing the pair 8-0. Kim and Zade then fell in the semifinals to Weber and Spec, 8-6, before rebounding against Shin and Schindler, 8-6.
Singles play begins tomorrow for the Spartans, with Mullane and Forman earning first-round byes as the No. 4 and No. 5 seeds, respectively. Linders, the No. 16 seed, is matched up against Zordani in the first round. The rest of the first round matches are: Roy vs. Herrmann, Dube vs. Elsass, Kim vs. Eric Frueh (Minnesota), Zade vs. Tyler Gardiner (Michigan) and Jadun vs. Jakhongir Jalalov (Wisconsin).
