EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State softball team dropped the second game of the weekend set with No. 5 Michigan, 8-0 this afternoon at Secchia Stadium. Junior Alyssa McBride went 2-for-2 for the Spartans (9-27, 2-11).
Michigan (32-6, 11-0) opened with three runs in the top of the first inning to take control of the action this afternoon. Lyndsay Doyle led off with a triple and came home on an infield single by Nicole Sappingfield. Sappingfield would later plate on a RBI single by Sierra Lawrence and the Wolverines capped the scoring on a RBI groundout by Taylor Hasselbach.
The Wolverines manufactured a run in the third to move ahead 4-0. Sierra Romero walked to lead off the inning, and would eventually score on a two-out single by Hasselbach.
In the bottom of the third, the Spartans loaded the bases with one out on consecutive singles from Jacquie Reiser, McKinzie Freimuth and Alyssa McBride. However, Kassidy Kujawa grounded into an inning ending double play, after being called out for getting hit by the ball outside the baseline.
Michigan added to its lead in the top of the fourth, plating two runs on a RBI single by Romero and a bases loaded walk by Hasselbach, to go ahead 6-0.
Lindsay Montemarano led off the fifth with her second home run of the season, and Michigan would push across their eighth run with a two-out single by Kelly Christner.
The Spartans failed to score in the bottom of the fifth ending the game due to the mercy rule.
Sara Driesenga went the distance for the win for Michigan, allowing five hits. Freshman Valerie Kaff picked up the loss in the circle for MSU.
MSU and Michigan return to Secchia Stadium tomorrow for the series finale. First pitch is set for 12 p.m. on Big Ten Network.
