BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana broke a 1-1 tie with three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning and went on to defeat the Spartans, 4-1, on Sunday afternoon at Bart Kaufman Field in Bloomington, Ind. The Spartans are now 20-17 overall and 5-7 in the conference, while the 18th-ranked Hoosiers improved to 25-11 and 11-1 in the Big Ten.
MSU starter Cam Vieaux continued his stretch of quality outings, getting out to a good start on Sunday by retiring the first six hitters of the game. The redshirt freshman sat down the Hoosiers in order in the fifth and sixth innings, stranded a pair of runners on base in the seventh, but found trouble in the eighth after giving up a one-out double in a 1-1 game.
Vieaux intentionally walked Kyle Schwarber and, with his pitch count climbing, he was replaced on the mound by Jake Lowery. With two on, IU's Sam Travis untied the game with a two-RBI double to left center field. Scott Donley knocked in another with an RBI single to make it 4-1.
Michigan State was able to grab the early lead in the game with a run in the top of the first. Blaise Salter followed a leadoff walk to Anthony Cheky with an RBI double to right center field for 1-0 MSU advantage. A two-out single later in the inning gave MSU runners at the corners and a chance to push across another run, but IU starting pitcher Brian Korte got Ryan Richardson to ground out.
Indiana tied the game at one in the bottom of the third on an RBI groundout by Tim O'Conner.
The Spartans best scoring opportunity later in the game came in the seventh when they loaded the bases with one out. But reliever Luke Harrison came in and got Johnny Nate to ground into a 1-2-3 double play.
Vieaux finished with five strikeouts and was charged with three runs off four hits. With the loss, he is now 5-3.
Harrison held MSU to just one hit over the final 2 2/3 innings to earn the win.
Michigan State will host Toledo on Tuesday at 3:05 p.m. at McLane Baseball Stadium.
