WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Michigan State wrestling team fell at No. 24 Purdue, 22-13, Sunday afternoon at Holloway Gymnasium in the final dual of the Big Ten season. MSU won four of the 10 matches, including victories by Javier Gasca (141 pounds), John Rizqallah (184), Nick McDiarmid (197) and Chris Nash (285).
Purdue (9-8, 2-6 Big Ten) won six of the first seven bouts to take a 22-3 lead before MSU closed the dual with three straight wins.
Aaron Assad started the afternoon for the Boilermakers with a 3-1 decision over Mitch Rogaliner at 125 pounds, and 11th-ranked Danny Sabatello recorded an 8-0 major decision against Garth Yenter at 133.
The Spartans (5-11, 1-8 Big Ten) got on the board in the third match at 141 pounds, as Gasca won for the second time this weekend in his new weight class. After defeating Indiana's Sean Brown by technical fall (15-0) on Friday, Gasca followed that performance with a 5-2 decision over Purdue's Nick Lawrence.
The Boilermakers took the next four matches, however, at 149, 157, 165 and 174 pounds, before MSU finished with three consecutive wins. Nick Trimble dropped a narrow 7-6 decision to Brandon Nelson at 149, while No. 11 Doug Welch pinned Travis Curley at 157 in the closing seconds of the third period at the 6:48 mark. Pat Robinson beat Roger Wildmo, 5-3, at 165, and Nick Proctor lost 2-0 to Chad Welch at 174.
Rizqallah, who entered the weekend ranked 23rd in the latest NCAA coaches' panel rankings, halted Purdue's run with a 6-4 victory at 184 pounds against Patrick Kissel. It marked Rizqallah's team-leading ninth dual win of the season.
McDiarmid won his third straight Big Ten dual match with an impressive 6-2 decision over ninth-ranked Braden Atwood. McDiarmid also recorded a win over a ranked opponent last Sunday when he pinned No. 15 Aaron Studebaker of Nebraska in the third period.
Chris Nash also went 2-0 on the road trip and closed the dual with a dominating 11-1 major decision against Gelen Robinson.
Michigan State closes out the dual season at home next weekend with matches at Jenison Field House against Duke (Friday, Feb. 20) and Central Michigan (Saturday, Feb. 21).
