No. 75 Women's Tennis Hosts Horizon League Duo

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The 3-1 Michigan State women's tennis team hosts Cleveland State and Detroit at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility on Saturday, Feb. 7. The No. 75 Spartans will start play at 10 a.m. against Cleveland State and 4 p.m. against Detroit.
"The week off certainly isn't ideal," said head coach Simone Jardim. "It does give us some time to work on some of the things that we needed to work on coming into the week. I think we are just excited to be able to compete this weekend."
MARK YOUR CALENDARS
The matches that were scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 1, have been rescheduled for Saturday, Feb. 21. The Spartans will face off against Bowling Green at 12 p.m. and against Toledo at 5 p.m. at the MSU Indoor Tennis Courts.
RISING IN THE RANKING
The Spartans are in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings for the first time in 2015. This is the first time that Michigan State has cracked the ranking since April, 22, 2014, when the Spartans were also ranked No. 75 in the nation. MSU was ranked No. 60 in the nation in the April 8 rankings.
NO RETREAT, NO SURRENDER, THAT IS SPARTAN LAW
The women's tennis team trailed No. 72 Fresno State, 0-3, on Monday to comeback to defeat the Bulldogs, 4-3. Sophomore Athena Trouillot notched the first victory of the day for Michigan State at No. 5 singles. Trouillot defeated Fresno State's Anneka Watts, 6-2, 6-1. At No. 6 singles, junior Emily Meyers beat Tanya Murtagh of Fresno State, 6-4, 6-2. Meyers now holds a record of 9-5 in singles play this season. Freshman Lexi Baylis tied the match at No. 3 singles, defeating the Bulldogs' Aishwarya Agrawal, 7-5, 6-3. The match came down to No. 4 singles where Catherine Parenteau faced Sofya Malysheva of Fresno State. Malysheva won the first set 6-7 (2). Parenteau then grabbed control of the match winning the next two sets, 6-2, 6-3, to secure the victory for MSU.
STATE OF SUCCESS
The Michigan State women's tennis team holds a record of 113-17 against non-conference opponents from the state of Michigan.
ON THE HORIZON
Cleveland State and Detroit are members of the Horizon League. The Spartans hold a 19-1 record against the current members of the Horizon League.
FEELING FRESH
The freshmen class has put together a record of 31-16 in singles play. The freshmen also post a combined record of 26-20 in doubles play.
HOME COOKING
The Spartans posted a 12-4 record in East Lansing last season, including a 9-1 record against non-conference opponents. Under coach Jardim the Spartans hold a 52-36 record at home. MSU is 2-0 this season in East Lansing.
B1G TURNAROUND
Last season, the Spartans tallied five Big Ten wins, the most since the 1991 season. The eighth-place finish was also the highest since the 2008 season when the Spartans finished sixth.
VIEWING THE VIKINGS
The Spartans boast a record of 9-0 against the Vikings, including 6-0 record under coach Jardim. Cleveland State comes into East Lansing with a record of 0-3, including a 0-2 record vs. ranked opponents. The Vikings are led by Lauren Golick, who has competed at No. 1 singles all three matches this season. Cleveland State finished last season with a 12-12 record and 7-1 in the Horizon League. The Vikings fell 4-2, to Youngstown State in the Horizon League Championship.
TALKING THE TITANS
Michigan State holds a 10-0 record all-time against Detroit; MSU is also 6-0 against UDM under coach Jardim. The two teams have already met this season at the Spartan Invitational in October, this is the first dual match meeting between the two schools. The Titans finished last season at 11-8, and 5-3 in the Horizon League. Detroit fell to Cleveland State in the Horizon League semifinals 4-1.
