EAST LANSING, Mich.- The Michigan State baseball team fell in its series finale vs. Purdue on Sunday afternoon at McLane Stadium, 6-4. The Spartans are now 29-18 overall and 11-7 in conference play. Ryan Krill extended his hitting streak to 12 games, going 2-for-4 at the plate with a home run.
"Give them credit," said head coach Jake Boss Jr. "They played harder than we did and they played better than we did. Bottom line was that we weren't good enough today. Going into today I thought we've been playing really well and that is what was so surprising about today."
Jeff Kinley took the loss for MSU and is now 3-2 on the year. Joe Eichmann earned the decision for Purdue, improving to 2-2.
Trailing 3-0, MSU rallied and put four runs on the board in the bottom half of the third, highlighted by a three-run blast from Krill that put the Spartans on top. Chad Roskelly singled and Kory Young was hit by a pitch to start the rally. Cam Gibson then chased Purdue starter Brett Haan with a double that scored Roskelly and got the Spartans on the board. Krill followed with his third homer in two games and put the Spartans up 4-3.
The home run was Krill's ninth of the season.
The Boilermakers (15-33, 2-16) regained the lead for good in the fifth when Brandon Krieg snuck a two-run homer just inside of the right field foul pole that made it a 5-4 game.
After the Spartans' four-run third, Purdue held the Spartans to just three hits over the remaining six innings. Arguably the best chance Michigan State had in that stretch ended with Brandon Hughes being tagged out at home after a wild pitch bounced perfectly off the backstop and back to Purdue catcher James Jewell.
Purdue added an insurance run in the eighth that made it 6-4.
Michigan State returns to action next weekend vs. Penn State, starting on Friday at 3:05 p.m. at McLane Baseball Stadium.
