Spartans Begin Action at Southern Scuffle

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. â€" The Michigan State wrestling team began the New Year by taking part in the elite Southern Scuffle tournament on Friday, which is being hosted by the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
The Spartans are 22nd in the team standings with 16 points.
Sophomores Mitch Rogaliner (125 pounds) and Javier Gasca (141) both earned team points for the Spartans by winning matches in the championship bracket before falling in the round of 16. Rogaliner received a first-round bye and won by a 6-4 decision over Zachary Fuentes of Drexel in the second round; he fell to No. 4 Nico Megaludis of Penn State by major decision, 14-5.
Gasca picked up victories over Ac Headlee of North Carolina, 8-5, and Tyler Buckiso of The Citadel, 8-0, but lost to Central Michigan's Zachary Horan, 3-1, in the round of 16.
Garth Yenter (133) and Dimitrus Renfroe (heavyweight) are also still alive in the consolation bracket and will see action on day two of the tournament.
Wesley Maskill (184) and Jacob Cooper (197) each won two matches on the first day, but were eliminated in the consolation bracket in the evening session.
