Javier Gasca is now 6-1 in Big Ten dual meets following his pin on Sunday against Ohio State's Stanley Hendricks.
CUYAHOGA FALLS, Ohio -- Redshirt sophomore 141-pounder Javier Gasca won his fifth consecutive Big Ten match with a pin in just 20 seconds, but the Michigan State wrestling team lost 33-9 to defending national champion and ninth-ranked Ohio State on Sunday afternoon at Walsh Jesuit High School.
Gasca improved his record to 16-4 overall and 6-1 in Big Ten dual meets by recording a fall over OSU's Stanley Hendricks in the first period. Gasca's only conference dual loss came by one point (4-3) to fourth-ranked Anthony Ashnault of Rutgers on Jan. 8.
True freshman Jacob Cooper also continued his winning streak, claiming his fourth straight dual win in a 2-0 sudden victory over Josh Fox at 197 pounds. Cooper now owns a 4-3 record in Big Ten meets.
Ohio State, which upped its record to 7-2 and 4-1 in the Big Ten, featured seven ranked wrestlers in its starting lineup on Sunday.
The dual started at 125 pounds, as defending national champion and top-ranked Nathan Tomasello picked up a technical fall in 5:56 over Mitch Rogaliner, 21-6. No. 8 Johnni DiJulius earned a hard-fought win over Garth Yenter at 133, 5-2, before Gasca's quick pin at 141 cut MSU's deficit to 8-6.
The Buckeyes won the next five matches after Gasca's fall, all by ranked wrestlers, to build a 29-6 lead.
Cooper halted OSU's momentum with his 2-0 sudden victory over Fox at 197 pounds, but Buckeye heavyweight Nick Tavanello ended the dual with a 13-1 major decision against Dimitrus Renfroe.
