UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. â€" The Michigan State wrestling team fell at No. 1 Penn State on Saturday night, 41-3, before a sold-out crowd at Rec Hall.
Redshirt sophomore Javier Gasca claimed MSU's lone win with a 6-2 decision over 14th-ranked and returning All-American Jimmy Gulibon at 141 pounds. Gasca, who is No. 21 in the NCAA coaches' rankings, finished the Big Ten dual season with a 7-2 record and is now 18-5 overall after two victories on the weekend.
With the win, Penn State (15-0, 9-0 Big Ten) claimed a share of the Big Ten regular-season championship, along with No. 2 Iowa. The two schools did not face each other in dual action. The Nittany Lions featured eight ranked wrestlers in their starting lineup on Saturday night, including four at No. 1 and seven in the top six.
At 165 pounds, Dean Vettese was tied with Geno Morelli after two periods, 1-1, but Morelli came away with the 8-2 decision after a strong third period.
In the 184-pound match, Shwan Shadaia and sixth-ranked Matt McCutcheon were scoreless after the first. McCutcheon, an NCAA Championships qualifier last year, scored three points in the second and held on for the 3-0 decision over Shadaia.
Michigan State (1-14, 1-8 Big Ten) finishes the dual season at Cleveland State on Friday, Feb. 19 at 7 p.m.
