East Lansing, Mich. -- Michigan State heads east this weekend to face off with a pair of Big Ten rivals, taking on No. 3 Ohio State and Rutgers on Lake Carnegie in Princeton, NJ.
The Spartans, receiving votes for the third straight week in the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) national poll, will be competing for the third time this season, and for the second straight week against Big Ten competition. The Buckeyes are tied for third in the poll for the second straight week.
The teams will race in Princeton this weekend on Lake Carnegie, which is the home course for the Princeton Tigers. MSU will line up first with the host Scarlet Knights, with racing starting at 8:10 am (second novice eights) and progressing up to the varsity eight race at 10 am. In the second session against the defending National Champion Buckeyes, a second three-boat race with MSU, Michigan, and Ohio State second novices kicks off action at 12:10, with MSU-OSU facing off head-to-head progressing to the varsity eights at 2 p.m. Rutgers will not field a second novice eight entry, so those races will be three-boat races in both sessions.
Rutgers is facing their first Big Ten competition of the season, last racing on March 26 at the Murphy Cup Regatta in Philadelphia. The Buckyes hosted the Big Ten/ACC Double Duals last week, with the Spartans and Michigan in addition to No. 4 Virginia and Clemson.
"We learned more about ourselves last week against strong competition down in Columbus, and the athletes have been very receptive to the small tweaks and changes we made this week to improve our race plans and find more speed," said head coach Matt Weise. "It's exciting with such a young novice eight that they are so eager to take the coaching and put themselves out of a comfort zone in order to try to accomplish things. We're seeing improvement in all of our boats right now, so it's another measuring stick for us. I think all the athletes are excited to get out on the water and put what we've been working on into action."
