CLEMSON, S.C. - Michigan State men's tennis dropped a close 4-3 match on the road to Clemson, Jan. 29. Michigan State dropped to 2-3, while Clemson improved to an unblemished 6-0 on the year.
"It was a tough loss," said head coach Gene Orlando. "We put ourselves in a position to get a big win on the road and came up just short. The team really extended themselves and we played our best tennis of the season thus far. We are improving and sometimes you have to suffer before you win, this one stung."
Michigan State claimed the doubles point to start the match off with the 1-0 lead. Junior Brett Forman and sophomore Alexander Kim finished first at No. 3 doubles and dropped their contest 6-4 to Christian Harris and Daffra Sanon. At No. 1 singles juniors Jasper Koenen and Michael Dube edged out their opponents 7-6. It came down to sophomore Billy Shisler and freshman Doug Francken who defeated Carlos Kelaidis and Robert Dudley 7-6 to claim the doubles point.
Koenen finished first at No. 3 singles and fell to Robert Dudley 7-6, (10-8), 6-3. Dube finished second at No. 2 singles and lost his match to #123 Daffra Sanon 6-3, 7-6 (11-9). Kim dropped his match to Sam Edwards in an extended set 6-4, 5-7, 6-0.
Forman picked up the first win for MSU when he defeated Ale Favrot at the No. 1 singles 5-7, 7-6 (7-5) 6-3 to make the score 3-2, the Spartans were only trailing one. Shisler dropped a 7-5, 6-2 decision in the No. 6 singles to Carlos Kelaidis, while sophomore Ivan Rakic picked up a victory in his only competition of the day 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-8).
