EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State men's tennis team improved its win streak to six as it concluded its Presidents' Weekend events with a 6-1 victory over Army, Feb. 18. Michigan State improved to 8-3 on the year, while Army dropped to 3-6.
"The Spartans earned another hard fought victory today over a strong Army team," said head coach Gene Orlando. "The doubles point was big and it's always great going up 1-0 heading into singles. We carried the momentum into singles play winning five out of the six single matches."
Michigan State started the match claiming the doubles point over Army. Junior Brett Forman and sophomore Alexander Kim picked up the first victory at No. 3 doubles defeating David Mitchell and Michael Sienko, 6-3. Juniors Michael Dube and Jasper Koenen kept it rolling for the Spartans with a 6-4 win at No. 1 doubles. Koenen and Dube's No. 1 doubles win-streak improved to four after the victory. Sophomore Billy Shisler and freshman Doug Francken's No. 2 doubles match went unfinished as the Spartans already claimed the double point to take the 1-0 lead to head into singles.
Koenen took the first victory at the No. 2 singles with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Sam Lampman at No. 2 singles to push his win streak to six. Sophomore Ivan Rakic kept the Spartans on track with a 6-2, 6-4 victory to give the Spartans the 3-0 advantage. Dube sealed the deal for the Spartans with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Grant Riechmann at No. 3 singles.
Forman picked up his sixth consecutive victory at No. 1 singles with a 6-3, 6-4 win against Michael Nguyen. Sophomore Colin Harvey lost his decision to Myles Conlin 6-3, 6-2 at No. 6 singles and Kim concluded the day with a 6-7, 7-6, 11-9 win against David Mitchell at No. 4 singles.
"It was a special weekend for the Spartans and an honor to compete against our country's finest in Air Force and Army," said Orlando. "Our fans were treated to great tennis all weekend. Perhaps the biggest highlight of the weekend was our fans when they gave a standing ovation to the Armed Service Teams and thanking them for their commitment to protecting our freedom and our country at the conclusion of the match. It will be a weekend our team will always remember."
Michigan State will take to the road and travel to Tampa, Fla. for two matches against South Florida and UNC Wilmington. MSU will play South Florida Mar. 4 at 1 p.m. and UNC Wilmington at 1 p.m. on Mar. 5.
