
Spartans Fall in Preseason Exhibition Match

ANN ARBOR, Mich. â€" The Michigan State University field hockey team fell in an exhibition match to the Wolverines of Michigan, 4-0, on Saturday afternoon at Ocker Field. Saturday's match marked the first for each team in the 2017 season.
The Spartans were outshot by the Wolverines 19-5 on the day. Senior goalkeeper Katie Miller tallied 10 saves in the match.
Michigan struck first at 9:55 of the first period, taking a 1-0 lead. The Spartans had opportunities on back-to-back corners shortly thereafter, but would be unable to convert.
Just before the half Michigan scored again, connecting off a rebound and taking a 2-0 lead into the break.
The Spartans came up with two huge defensive plays, stopping back-to-back corners on saves from Katie Miller. The Wolverines continued to chip away at the Spartan defense, netting two goals in under two minutes in the second half to defeat the Spartans, 4-0.
MSU will officially kick off the 2017 regular season when it travels to California for three matches next week. The Spartans will first face Pacific on Friday, Aug. 25 before heading to UC Davis for a match on Saturday. The green and white will conclude its first road trip of the season on Aug. 28 at Cal.
