Michigan State wrestling battled No. 2 Ohio State tough on Friday night at Jenison Field House, taking three bouts but falling to the Buckeyes, 35-12.
Redshirt freshman Austin Hiles upset No. 13 Te'Shan Campbell at 165 pounds, redshirt sophomore Logan Ritchie took his first Big Ten dual win of the season at 174 and redshirt freshman Christian Rebottaro extended his dual win streak to 3-0 since his return to the starting lineup.
"I think the positives in certain areas were our guys realized that they can compete with one of the best teams in the country up-and-down, and as we take a step forward as a program, they have to have the mindset that no matter who they're wrestling, it doesn't matter if it's a ranked opponent or an unranked opponent, that we have to wrestle the same every time we step on the mat," Michigan State head coach Roger Chandler said. "We can't wrestle guys based on what they're ranked on paper, you've got to wrestle guys based on what we have and our abilities."
Highlighting the match was the momentous win by Hiles, who came back from a 2-0 deficit to take a 4-2 lead as Campbell was penalized with stalling calls. As Campbell got his sixth stalling call late in the third period, the Buckeye was disqualified and Hiles brought home six team points for the Spartans going into the mid-match break.
"We've been telling our guys all year long that you've got to wrestle within yourself and believe in your positions, and that's what he did today. He's wrestling one of the best guys in the country and he stayed true to his game plan and didn't get rattled at all, even after he got taken down, and that's what won him the match was pressure and wrestling at his position. Good things happen when you wrestle within yourself," Chandler said.
MSU added six more team points with decisions from Ritchie at 174 and Rebottaro at heavyweight, but the Buckeyes garnered bonus points in six out of seven matches to win, 35-12.
Spartan wrestling returns to action on Friday, Feb. 2 in West Lafayette, Indiana, against No. 24 Purdue at 7 p.m. The match will be streamed on BTN Plus.
