EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Playing in their final home game of the season on Friday, October 12, the Michigan State field hockey team fell to in-state rival Michigan by a final score of 1-0 at Ralph Young Field.
Michigan State fell to 4-12 on the season overall and the Wolverines improved to 10-5. Michigan improved to 6-1 in the Big Ten and maintained their spot atop the conference standings.
The Spartans were out-shot 16-2 overall and 8-0 in shots on goal. Michigan State played well defensively, making saves on seven of the Wolverines' eight shots on goal, including six for freshman goalkeeper Jade Arundell and a defensive save for senior Amanda Robinson.
For the fourth time in their last four conference contests, the Spartans held their opponent scoreless through the first half of action. MSU played a complete defensively, save for the lone Michigan goal.
With the score knotted up at 0-all, Michigan finally broke through the scoring barrier in the 57th minute. Guadalupe Fernandez Lacort's shot ricocheted off a Spartan defender and past Arundell. The goal was reviewed by the officials, but confirmed shortly thereafter.
In an attempt to spark some offense late in the game, Michigan State pulled Arundell from goal and opted to go with 11 attackers and an empty goal. Unfortunately, the Spartans couldn't find enough of a spark as the contest came to a close.
