Spartans in Ninth After One Round of the Tar Heel Invitational

CHAPEL HILL, North Carolina -- The No. 25 Michigan State women's golf team shot an 8-over-par 296 in the opening round of the Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invitational on Friday in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The Spartans are in ninth place in the 16-team field that includes 12 teams ranked in the Golfweek top 50.

No. 10 Duke leads the tournament at 17-under-par 271 as just three teams finished Friday under par at the UNC Finley Course.
Freshman Valery Plata shot an even-par 72 to lead the Spartans and is tied for 19th place. Plata had a consistent round that included 14 pars, two birdies and two bogeys.
Juniors Allyson Geer-Park and Paz Marfa Sans both shot 2-over-par 74s and are tied for 32nd place.
Sophomore Yurika Tanida is in 52nd place after a 4-over-par 76. Freshman Haylin Harris carded a 5-over-ppar 77 and is in 68th.
Duke's Jaravee Boonchant leads the field after a 6-under-par 66.
The Spartans will tee off in round two between 9:09 and 9:45 a.m. on Saturday.
