MICHIGAN STATE
Head Coach Mark Dantonio
Opening Statement…
Good football game. Tough ending to a good football game. I thought we played competitive throughout the game. Pretty much had opportunities, but we've got to make good on every opportunity. Not enough production offensively. When you look at possession time, you'll see it's highly one-sided. You have to credit the Michigan defense; they did an outstanding job. I think we saw every season there was to see out there, in terms of fall, winter, spring and summer. We played through the elements there; I think both teams did that. Disappointing for our football team and for our fans. I thought the crowd was outstanding in that regard, but you got opportunities, you've got to come up with… When you have an opportunity you have to come up with it. Probably, I don't know, the biggest sequence of events takes place when we get the ball back, it's 7-7, and we're at the 50 or thereabouts and we have a 15-yard penalty and it makes it first-and-25. Then we punt it and on the first play, 2:24 in the third quarter left, he throws a dime to Peoples-Jones. I believe for 80 and all of the sudden it's 14-7 like that. And so you got to respond. You know, we didn't have many opportunities down there offensively, but when we have an opportunity we have to be able to make good on those and at least have a drive. I'll take some questions, go from there.
On if he considered going to a back-up quarterback earlier…
No, I just felt like, we just felt like, I don't know whether he was off or whether he was dinged up or what, but we're disappointed. He's played well for us and we'll give him the opportunity to continue to play. He had never asked to come out so I didn't want to pull him. Eventually the last series we did something, but basically we went down the field on penalties to give us that opportunity.
Â
On what percentage Brian Lewerke was going into Saturday's game…
I thought he was well enough to play. He didn't practice Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, but I thought he was well enough to play. We made that decision collectively, with his family, with him, but that's not why we lost the football game.
Â
On how critical the injury to Felton Davis III is…
Felton has got an achilles tear so he out for the season obviously, but he'll bounce back and have a successful pro career, I understand that, know that. But that's unfortunate and you know it happened right before halftime, so that's something we have to regroup around at halftime, which I thought we did. Came out and played hard in the third quarter and did some things, but we're going to lose him in that regard. We've had quite a few injuries to wide receivers this year, but you gotta deal with it, that's part of the game. Nobody is crying.
Â
On how he plans to handle the quarterback situation and goals moving forward…
Brian's our quarterback. Brian's our quarterback and you know we'll evaluate that as we go, but, he's our quarterback. There's no quarterback issue or anything like that. He's been very successful here, and there's a lot of things to go through you know. I thought they played great man-to-man coverage, so the windows were small. We tried to take some shots and couldn't get loose down the field. Justin Layne played wide receiver for us because the wide receiver situation's in a pinch, and he had limited opportunities to practice, so some things probably weren't worked out from a timing type situation. But there's no quarterback controversy, and back to your question, our goal is to win every football game. As bad as it looks on a piece of paper, we had an opportunity to win the football game, so our goal is to win and that's what we'll challenge with. That's what we'll do, and our focus will be on next week against Purdue. We've always tried to evaluate ourselves on how you play after a big loss and how you play after a big win. That's the mindset on how you respond, so that's what we'll continue to do. We'll respond.
Â
On if he worried that injuries will prevent the offense from getting going…
You can't have that attitude. We have players, they can come, they can play and we'll find a play. We've gotta play better and if you look at this football game, it's 7-7 with 2:24 left in the third quarter. We're right there playing very well defensively and really look at a couple of plays where the ball pops up in the air. If it's us picking that ball off we may be talking a little bit differently, maybe not, but, the ball gets tipped up in the air and they make a couple of plays for first downs. Again give credit to them, they played well, but we'll respond. We've had a lot of injuries, more than we've had in the past, but we measure ourselves on how we play as a team and the team has 120 people on it.
Co-Offensive Coordinator Dave Warner
On not being able to keep momentum going after tying the game…
Big plays is what it comes down to. We got some guys making some big plays and we were able to move down the field fairly well. We weren't able to do that in other areas because of a lack of execution, I guess.
Â
On QB Brian Lewerke and the offense's performance…
Tough day for us offensively, Brian included. It's not on Brian. He certainly did not have his best day, but we did not have our best day offensively, so it doesn't all come down on him.
Â
On Lewerke and the wide receivers…
It's probably a little bit of a combination of [miscommunication and missed throws]. With some guys that were game time decisions because of injury, they might not be practicing as much during the week, and because of that they might not be exactly on the same page.
Defensive Coordinator Mike TresselÂ
On the defense being exhausted at the end…
You want to have an empty tank at the end of the game. We expect them to put everything out on the field, and both sides of the ball on this football team expect to do whatever it takes to win a football game, so it's disappointing. We did talk about fighting until it read zeroes on the clock, and I think our guys did that. We need to do whatever it takes on every side of every phase to win this football game.
Â
On guarding against losing team chemistry if defensive outperforms the offense…
One of the things we love about this is football team is that it's one football team. It's not anything other than 120 guys as one. I don't feel like there's any situations where if we're playing poorly, the offense gets frustrated, or if the offense isn't playing well the defense is getting frustrated. These are great kids, 120 guys as one, love them for that.
Â
On LB Tyriq Thompson regaining his stride…
Obviously for Tyriq, this is a huge football game, with his dad being a Wolverine. He's really playing good football right now. He's playing the best football of his career; he's playing very physical. Michigan did some things to attack the boundary, where they're pulling everyone they can around the boundary end, and Tyriq went and took multiple people out, and that's sometimes what you have to do because on the blackboard when they get that many bodies in there and we just trade one-for-one, then good things happen for the offense. Tyriq really played physical, and I'm proud of him.
Â
On QB Shea Patterson running the ball…
On the fourth-down-and-two when he kept the ball, they bunched us in a formation, got a lot of bodies in there and created a couple extra gaps. Quite honestly, we were probably a little over anxious and a little anxious to fill in on the run. We talked a lot and practiced a lot about in those key moments he would keep the ball, but I think in the heat of the moment, in the fog of war, we got a little bit too nosy and buried a few too many of our bodies inside.
Â
On the two deflected passes that were completed for Michigan…
We look back at it, I think both of the touchdown drives – other than the one long pass – had third down pass deflections that felt like they were in the air for a long time, and you hope defensively, with everyone bursting on the ball, that those come in your hands more often than not. It was frustrating. When you're playing defense, you get in these long drives, you can't let one play take the wind out of your sails, and did it? I don't know, I'd have to watch the film and see how we played after that. The fact that there were two touchdown drives where tipped ball kept us on the field, it's frustrating.
On the game plan on defense…
Our defensive goal every week is [holding the other team to] 17 points, and that's on our goal board. This particular week, our goal was to hold them to less points than our offense scored, and we weren't able to do that.
Â
On CB Tre Person's coverage on Michigan's long touchdown…
We're a press, man, quarters team out there, and we've been trying to mix up a whole lot. In that particular case we were press-man and we have a safety on that side of the field, and when they just run a 9-route up the sideline, for the most part, he's on his own. That's what we do, and that's why corner backs come here, to play in that situation – and they got us that time.Â
Michigan State junior quarterback Brian Lewerke
On injuries affecting accuracy...
I don't want to make excuses with that. Obviously, it probably affected it a little bit, but not enough to be as bad as I played today.Â
On how this loss felt...
It's not fun. We always want to win this game and make our alumni proud, so it doesn't feel good.
On Felton Davis' injury...Â
Yeah that sucks. My prayers go out to him for sure. Obviously it is not going to help our offense, that's for sure. We will see and have some other guys step up.Â
On the team's injury frustrations...
I am just waiting for it to stop, honestly. I would love to have all of the guys out there.
Michigan State junior linebacker Joe Bachie
On losing to Michigan…
It's very hard. You come to Michigan State to beat these guys and when you don't, you have to live with it for a year.
On the defense being on the field extensively…Â
It gets difficult. But defensively, we had a couple of turnovers, there were a couple of balls in the air, it just wasn't rolling our way today. Maybe one of those tipped passes goes our way, the game's different. Or one of those fumbles turns into a scoop and score, it's a different game.
Â
On recovering from tipped passes...
It's tough because it's a 50-50 ball and it goes up in the air and sometimes we've been coming down with those. Today, we didn't. We had to respond and the first time it happened, it ended up being a touchdown drive. We didn't respond well that time. Â
Â
On moving on after the loss…
You can sit on this game for 24 hours. Next week we have a Purdue team that's going to come in ready to play. If we're not ready to play, anything can happen in that game. As leaders, as coaches, everyone is going to move forward in the right direction. We have to come together again and regroup.
Michigan State Safety Khari Willis
On the two touchdown passes...
The one, the dude ran a post route and the corner was all over it. Â The second one I didn't really see, I just saw him run down the field. We will look at the film, and I know whoever the play was on, I have trust and faith that they will be better the next week. Â
Â
On Patterson's running...
He did what they asked him to do I feel like. Â Some designed runs where he was pretty much open. Â Some tip balls that went in their favor to help him out on some third down plays and stuff like that. He did what he had to do and it is what it is.
Â
On the rivalry…
This is Michigan vs Michigan State. Â Â We both feel that way about each other, and I feel that is just the result emotionally with tempers flaring. Â Â
Â
On today's game compared to past years…
We didn't win but that is about it. I feel like the intensity was there, the effort was there and the seriousness of this game was there. Â Â
Â
On Felton Davis' injury…
I talked to him and found out at some point during the game. Â He is a tough competitor, and I wish the best for him and hope he can recover. Â That is my brother, and I am going to be there for him.
MICHIGAN
Head Coach Jim Harbaugh
On what this means to his team…
Oh great win. Fabulous mood in the locker room. Team feels great about itself, and it should.
Â
On what his team did to keep things from spiraling out of control in the third quarter…
I mean, our team never blinked the entire time. They played hard, they played smart, and you know from the pre-game shenanigans, there was no backing down today by our guys from then on.
Â
On how they ran the ball today and how the offense has done in the third and fourth quarters…
Yeah it was a tremendous job. I mean, it starts with keeping the ball for 41 minutes. And that's quite an accomplishment. It's an offensive accomplishment and a defensive accomplishment. Our defense was lights out today. Holding an opponent to 91 yards of total offense, and they were 0 for 12 on third down conversions. I mean, that's the kind of statistics you dream, that's a dream game. And then offensively against a highly ranked running defense, our guys didn't back down, just kept pounding, and got the job done.
Â
On the hour break due to the weather delay and his approach on it…
Yeah, I mean just come in first thing and let them know how long they have to get there, relax your mind, and that'd be about 45-50 minutes. Then we'd have 10 minutes to meet back up with the coaches before we went out. All through the time we were doing soft tissue, and all that available to stretch and roll out. Mostly just wanted our guys to kind of clear their minds for that 45 minutes, and do what we do when we're back on the field. We had a routine to get limbered back up, got the arms loose and the legs loose. That was the plan.
Michigan Junior QB Shea Patterson
On the touchdown pass to Donovan Peoples-Jones…
I think that was one of the most crazy games I have been a part of. Defense put us in good situations, and I think that gave us confidence to know that we just stay with in ourselves and when we get that moment to break through, we aren't going to give it back. Donovan one-on-one coverage, good luck with that. He made a hell of a play after the catch.
On throwing the ball in the rain…
It wasn't too tough. I think the wet grass was probably the biggest part. You slip, and you have to keep your pace. It was tough for Karan (Higdon) and our running backs. I mean when you are running, I think on that fumble, it wasn't his fault. It was the field, he just slipped, and it wasn't too tough. It only rained for a little bit."
On his first matchup against Michigan State…
Definitely, we knew this was going to be a big game. Hell of an atmosphere here at Michigan State Stadium. They brought their fans, we just had to stay within ourselves and know that the game was coming back to us and it was definitely a success.
On the importance of the offense getting on a roll…
I think coming into it we had a lot of confidence. I think when you do have those long drives, well one, you keep your defense off the field and give them time to rest; another, it gets you in a rhythm offensively and getting comfortable and it gives you momentum.
Michigan Sophomore WR Donovan Peoples-Jones
On the momentum of the offense…
We just ate the quarters, like Karan said our offensive line has been doing an unbelievable job. It is really easy when Shea has time to deliver the perfect pass that he does. Our running game opens up, our passing game was opening up was opening the run.
On scoring his touchdown…
From the start, the line did a great job of giving Shea time to deliver, which I think is the most perfect pass that he delivered. The rest was just what we have been practicing. Be a tough runner, watching Karan, watching what he does motivates me. Watching Shea, what he does, motivates me too. We all motivate each other, and it's just fun to be around.
On the loss last year to the satisfaction this year…
It feels great. It really does. I can't say that I have been more proud of a win so far, but we just have to focus in on the next couple of weeks. Like Karan said focus on us and control what we can control.
