Spartans Complete Play at ITA Midwest Regionals

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Michigan State women's tennis team completed play at ITA Midwest Regionals this weekend at the Varsity Tennis Center in Ann Arbor, Mich.
"Definitely more ups than downs and good quality competition," MSU head coach Kim Bruno said. "We put ourselves in positions to win a lot of matches and I think moving forward we will be a better team because of this weekend."
In doubles play, the duo of freshman Lauren Lemonds and sophomore Caroline Szabo defeated Dee Dee Leenabachong and Thalita Rodrigues of Toledo, 8-5, before falling in the second round to Shiori Fukuda and Luna Dormet of Ohio State, 8-7 (5). The team of freshman Nicole Stephens and junior Samantha Memije also won their first match against Akron's Anna Uljanov and Claudia Rosas, 8-4, before falling to Illinois' Jaclyn Switkes and Mia Rabinowitz, 8-6. Sophomore Mary Lewis and senior Davina Nguyen won their first match against Katarina Drazic and Kristina Pukhaeva of Chicago State, 8-3, but then fell to Danielle Wolf and Mary Beth Hurley of Ohio State, 8-2.
Senior Emily Metcalf and freshman Maja Pietrowicz were the last remaining duo for the Spartans in the doubles main draw as they won two matches before falling in the round of 16. They defeated Dasha Artamonova and Sofia Borcuti of Oakland, 8-4, and Lesley Foe and Elisabeth Desmarais of Marquette, 8-5, before eventually falling to Northwestern's Lee Or and Inci Ogut, 8-4.
In qualifying singles, Metcalf emerged from the bracket with three wins to secure her place in the main draw. She defeated Ksenia Providohkina of Detroit, 6-2, 6-2, and Kokoro Chishaki of Toledo, 7-6, 6-4, as well as Alexandrina Chinikova of Marquette in straight sets, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1.
In qualifying singles consolation, Stephens defeated DePaul's Jovicic in three sets, 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (3).
In main draw singles, five Spartans fell in the opening round. Pietrowicz fell to Ally Bojczuk of Notre Dame, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3. Metcalf fell to Jelena Vujanic of Valparaiso, 6-3, 6-3. Lemonds battled to three sets with Inci Ogut of Northwestern, but eventually fell 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. Lewis fell to Cameron Corse of Notre Dame, 7-5, 6-4. Memije also fell to Keisha Clousing of DePaul, 6-1, 7-5.
The Spartans return to the court at the Harvard Invite Friday, Nov. 2 to Sunday, Nov. 4, in Cambridge, Mass.
