Winston’s Big Second Half Helps Lead Michigan State Past ULM, 80-59

East Lansing, Mich.. – Junior guard Cassius Winston (Detroit, Mich./University of Detroit Jesuit) scored 18 of his team-high 23 points in the second half as No. 11 Michigan State pulled away from the University of Louisiana at Monroe (ULM) en route to an 80-59 win at the Breslin Center Wednesday night.

Michigan State led by only six points, 35-29, at the break and ULM cut the lead to 35-31 on a layup from Jontray Harris, but it was the Cassius Winston Show after that.
Winston converted a conventional three-point play to give MSU a 38-31 lead and triggering an 18-4 run as he scored 14 points during that span. MSU extended its lead to 53-35 when senior guard Matt McQuaid (Duncanville, Texas/Duncanville) fed sophomore Xavier Tillman (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) for a layup.
ULM cut the lead to 53-40 with five-straight points, capped by a dunk from Javien Williams, but the Spartans extended it back to 18- points, 61-43, on free throws from redshirt senor forward Kenny Goins (Troy, Mich./Warren Mott) with 11:45 to play.
The Spartans lead would not get lower than 15 points and a layup from redshirt junior Conner George (Okemos, Mich./Okemos) provided the final margin with 21 seconds left.
The Spartans got off to a quick start in the game's opening minutes, taking a 10-4 lead on a 3-pointer from junior guard Joshua Langford (Huntsville, Ala./Madison Academy) and then extending it to 13-6 on a free throw from freshman forward Aaron Henry (Indianapolis, Ind./Ben Davis) with 14:17 to play in the half.
The Warhawks took advantage of poor shooting from MSU – the Spartans shot only 28.2 percent in the first half and 10.5 percent from 3-point land – and stayed in the game
ULM took a 20-18 lead on a 3-pointer from Michael Ertel with 8:25 to play and the rest of the half was neck-and-neck with three lead changes and a pair of ties.
The Spartans out-scored ULM 11-5 over the final 2:53 and took a 35-29 lead on a Winston jumper with five seconds left.

After shooting only 28.2 percent from the floor in the first half (11-of-39), including just 10.5 percent from 3-point land (2-of-19), the Spartans connected on 54.8 percent of their second half shots (17-of-31) and 40.0 percent of their 3-pointers (4-of-10).
The Spartans shot a season-high 81.8 percent from the free throw line (18-of-22).
Michigan State received a season-high 31 points from the bench
