The Spartans look to maintain their early season success in Reno.
EAST LANSING, Mich. - After a 2-0 start to the dual meet season, the Michigan State Spartans head West this week for the Reno Tournament of Champions on Thursday, December 20. Michigan State has 19 participants entered into the tournament which includes one unattached wrestler in redshirt Peyton Omania at 149 pounds. Thursday's action can be viewed live on FloWrestling.com, subscription fees may apply.

SCOUTING THE FIELD
Competing at the Reno Tournament of Champions is American, Arizona State, Cal Baptist, Cal Poly, Cal State Bakersfield, Clackamas Community College, Embrey-Riddle Aeronautical, Fresno State, Grandview, Menlo, Michigan State, Minot State, Montana State – Northern, Oklahoma State, Old Dominion, Pacific, Simpson, Southern Oregon, Southwestern Oregon, Stanford, The Citadel, Umpqua and Wyoming.
From the NAIA squads, Clackamas boasts seven wrestlers in the InterMat top eight while Umpqua has one. Additionally, Clackamas is the No. 1-ranked team at the NJCCA level. Five teams from the NAIA level are ranked in the top 15 with Grandview ranking at No. 1, Montana State-Norther at No. 3, Embry-Riddle at No. 8, Menlo at No. 10 and Southern Oregon at No. 15. Grandview has 11 ranked wrestlers on its roster followed by Montana State-Northern with nine, Menlo and Embry-Riddle each has even and Southern Oregon has five.
From a Division I perspective the competition in Reno is loaded with talent featuring a grand total of 25 wrestlers ranked by InterMat. Oklahoma State leads the crowd with 10 ranked wrestlers followed by Arizona State with five, Wyoming and Old Dominion with three, Michigan State with two and lastly American and CSU Bakersfield each with one. Oklahoma State is one of the top ranked teams in the country entering the tournament at No. 3 overall followed by No. 15 Arizona State and No. 24 Wyoming.
POTENTIAL BIG TIME MATCH-UP'S FOR MSU
Among the weight classes where Michigan State has a ranked wrestler (125, 174, 184) there are six ranked opponents via InterMat. At 125 pounds the bracket features No. 4 ranked Nick Piccininni who sits at an undefeated 6-0 for Oklahoma State and No. 7-ranked Ryan Millhof of Arizona State who is 11-0. Sitting at No. 8 in the division, Michigan State sophomore Rayvon Foley will be aiming for his third tournament title of the season at 10-0 with a chance to face-off against two of the best in the business.
Redshirt sophomore Drew Hughes is 11-2 on the season, but has yet to enter the InterMat rankings. That could change after Thursday as the 174 pound division at the Reno Tournament of Champions features three potential ranked opponents in No. 2-ranked Zahid Valencia of Arizona State, No. 7-ranked Jacobe Smith of Oklahoma State and No. 20-ranked Seldon Wright of Old Dominion.
At 184 pounds, No. 16-ranked Cameron Caffey of Michigan State's primary opposition will be No. 15-ranked Dakota Geer of Oklahoma State. Caffey and Geer have a common opponent in Kayne McCallum with each wrestler earning a decision over the senior from Oklahoma.
