Following months of training in the summer and fall, Friday marks the first time for sprinters, jumpers and throwers to compete since the outdoor season last spring.
"Really this is a final test for the fall because they've been training since just after Labor Day, it's a long haul," Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Walt Drenth said. "While we've done periodic testing, this gives us an important dry run for the regular season. We're looking forward to seeing some of the younger athletes in action, and I know they're excited for it. The competitive environment changes the dynamics, and as coaches we're ready to see how they respond."
A year ago, five MSU athletes earned first-place finishes and 51 Spartans claimed top-10 finishes to start the season off strong. Friday's meet will give sprinters, jumpers and throwers a chance to post early marks for the season and take a first-step towards the Big Ten and NCAA Championships.
"I think we'll have some pretty good marks to start with and build upon," Drenth said. "We're always building towards the championship season and this will help us move their training forward with adjustments we might need to make. Each meet from here on out is a step along the way to the end goal." Â Â Â
The Spartans' indoor track season resumes Saturday, Jan. 12 with the University of Michigan Open in Ann Arbor.
The Holiday Open begins at 2:45 p.m. with the men's and women's high jump, followed by field and running events kicking off at 3:00 p.m.
