SUNSET, South Carolina - The No. 11 Michigan State women's golf team finished as runners-up at the Clemson Invitational with a 20-under-par 844 (277-284-283). The Spartans shot a tournament-best 5-under-par 283 on Sunday at The Reserve at Lake Keowee to move up one spot and finish two shots ahead of host Clemson. No. 7 Furman won the tournament with a 30-under-par 834.
The 844 is the lowest 54-hole team score in program history, five shots better than the 849 the Spartans put up at the Central District Invitational in 2014.
Sophomore Allyson Geer also put her name in the MSU record book as her 9-under-par 207 (67-70-70) tied for the lowest individual 54-hole tournament score in program history. Geer carded her third round of the tournament under par on Sunday with a 2-under-par 70. She was 1-under-par on both the front and back nine and finished just one shot behind tournament champ Alice Hewson of Clemson.
Prior to Geer, Allyssa Ferrell was the last Spartan to post a 207, doing so at the 2014 Central District Invitational.
Senior Sarah Burnham shot an even-par 72 on Sunday and finished the tournament 7-under-par 209 (66-71-72), which put her in a tie for fourth place. It's the fourth top-five finish of the season for Burnham.
Sophomore Paz Marfa Sans moved up seven places on Sunday by carding her second straight 2-under-par 70. She was 4-under-par 212 (72-70-70) for the tournament and tied for 12th place.
Senior Katie Sharp had her best round of the tournament on Sunday with a 1-under-par 71. She moved up 10 places into a tie for 25th place at 1-over-par 217 (72-74-71).
In what was her first tournament of the spring, freshman Yurika Tanida was 5-over-par 221 (74-73-74), as she tied for 44th place.
It's the Spartans' third runner-up finish this year as they have finished in the top three of seven of eight tournaments in 2017-18.
