MSU moves to 1-1 on the season with an overtime win
EAST LANSING, Mich - The Michigan State University field hockey team earned its first victory of the season on Sunday, August 26 defeating Kent State University in overtime by a final score of 3-2. Freshman Isa van der Weij scored the game-winning goal in the 77th minute to earn sudden victory for the Spartans.
With the win the Spartans improve to 1-1 on the season while Kent State slips to 0-2.
After being held scoreless against Old Dominion in the season opener, the MSU offense broke out in a big way on Sunday, leading to 18 total shots and 11 shots on goal. The Spartans were out-shot 11-7 in the first half, but bested Kent State 11-4 in total shots during the second half and overtime.
Michigan State came out of the gate quickly forcing a penalty corner in the first minute of play. Following a pair of saved shots from freshman Daphne Voorman and senior Amanda Robinson, freshman Aisha Osinga earned a penalty stroke following a foul in the penalty circle. Osinga gave MSU an early 1-0 lead as she placed her attempt past the Kent State goalkeeper for the first goal of her collegiate career.
"It was great to come out of the gate and get a corner early and score early which gave us some momentum," MSU head coach Helen Knull said. "A big goal for us today was to take more risks in the attacking end which we did and you saw it by the three goals, but also by the stats and what we were putting up."
The Golden Flashes wasted no evening the score however as Clara Rodriguez Seto corralled a pass from Kortney Keller in the seventh minute to tie the game at one goal apiece.
MSU junior Kelsey Keener was the next Spartan to hit pay dirt, firing a shot past goalkeeper Mary Crumlish on a feed from sophomore Lia Sinisi in the 21st minute to give MSU a 2-1 advantage.
Rodriguez Seto came through for Kent State once again, tying the game on a rebound in the 27th minute. The Kent State sophomore was in the right place at the right time to capitalize on a shot by Laila Richter, which was saved by Spartan goalkeeper Jade Arundell.
Michigan State continued to pressure the Golden Flashes goalkeeper in the second half, but were unable to come up with a game-winner in regulation. Osinga earned a penalty corner in the 57th minute that showed promise for the Spartans as Voorman, van der Weij, and senior Madison O'Neill each earned shots in front of the goal.
Freshman Maddie McDonough came through with a defensive save off a Kent State penalty corner in the 66th minute to help push the game to extra time.
Senior Samantha Siegel found the first shot on goal for Michigan State in the overtime period helping to set-up a penalty corner attempt for van der Weij. Following a shot on goal by Voorman, van der Weij hit a backhanded rocket from the left side of goal to earn sudden victory for the Spartans.

On improvements on the attacking side...
We talked a lot about being a little selfish in the attacking 25, we've got some players that we're getting into space and we're laying passes off instead of just tracking and taking people on one-on-one. We're finally playing the ball to space. We've struggled previously to see the space we want to play into versus passing straight to your teammate and that was a big change for us today.

Michigan State travels out East for a three game road-trip in Connecticut, starting with a 5 p.m. match against defending national champion UConn on Friday, August 31. The Spartans later travel to Quinnipiac and Yale to round out the trip.
